Overview

SCSU Your Moment. Your Future. Your University. Own It.

Southern Connecticut State University is one of four geographically convenient institutions that make up the Connecticut State University System. As such, Southern offers the advantages of a large state school -- such as lower tuition and access to educational resources -- but with a fraction of the population. Total student population is about 11,000, which includes approximately 2,900 graduate students. Students benefit from small class size, closer interaction with faculty, and a student to faculty ratio of 15:1.

Southern Connecticut State University's Graduate Degrees in Arts and Sciences

Southern Connecticut State University's graduate programs are geared toward developing professional skills and knowledge that will have practical application in students' chosen careers. Specialized master's programs are offered in applied physics; bilingual, multicultural education/teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL); computer science (with concentrations in visualization and intelligent systems, distributed computing, or computer systems); environmental education; political science (with concentrations in public policy and administration, or international politics); psychology; sociology; and women's studies. The creative writing M.F.A., as the only "full-residency" M.F.A. program offered in Connecticut, offers intensive on-campus classes, which foster mentorship and community among its participants.

Optional Teacher Certification at SCSU an Added Benefit

Reflecting its beginnings as a teacher training school nearly 120 years ago, many of the university's liberal arts graduate programs can also prepare students for careers in teaching. For example, the following programs offer the option for students to earn a Connecticut teacher certification in addition to their master's degrees: art education, biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics education, and science education (with concentrations in biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics).

Master of Business Administration

The flexible, multidisciplinary, M.B.A. program is offered through evening and weekend courses, and with either a full-time or part-time cohort. Employer involvement is an important component of the program; students will be assisted in forming mentoring relationships with employers who can provide access to educational and research opportunities within their organizations.

Graduate Degrees in Education

Southern Connecticut State University provides numerous programs for teacher education. Master of Science degrees are offered in elementary and early childhood education; reading; information and library science (including coursework relevant to public libraries, special libraries, school libraries, and information systems and technology. Courses are offered on-campus and online); and school health education. Southern has recently become the first public university to offer a concentration in autism in a special education master's program. Other special education concentrations include adaptive technology, early childhood special education, interdisciplinary special education, learning disabilities, and serious/emotional disabilities. Also offered through the school of education are M.S. degrees in exercise science (with concentrations in human performance or sports psychology), school psychology, and counseling (with concentrations in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, or a dual track).

Graduate Degrees in Health and Human Services

The university offers a wide variety of professional master's level programs in health and human services, including nursing (with concentrations for the nursing educator, clinical nurse leader, or family nurse practitioner), public health, recreation and leisure studies (with concentrations in recreation administration, therapeutic recreation, and college teaching), social work (with concentrations in clinical practice or management), and speech-language pathology.

Other Advanced Degree Programs

In addition to the master's programs described above, Southern also offers Sixth-Year professional diplomas in counseling and school psychology, educational leadership, classroom teacher specialist studies, educational foundations, educational coaching, library information studies, reading, special education, and science education. There are also doctoral programs in educational leadership, and nursing education.

Special Academic Centers

Several specialized academic centers support scholarship at Southern, including the Center for Adaptive Technology, Center for Communication Disorders, Center for the Environment, Center for Marine and Coastal Studies, Center for Community and School Action Research, Louis and Joan M. Sirico Center for Elders and Families, and Research Center on Computing and Society.

Fellowships and Assistantships at Southern Connecticut State University

Southern Connecticut State University offers a limited number of non-need based graduate research fellowships and graduate assistantships available to qualified full-time graduate students. Research fellows undertake scholarly research related to their academic discipline, while assistantships are available in graduate teaching, research, or administrative work.

An Attractive, Convenient Campus

Southern is located on the outskirts of New Haven, an up-and-coming small city with an exciting arts and restaurant scene. Convenient rail service provides easy access to New York and Boston. The nearby Long Island Sound provides ample opportunities to enjoy beaches and boating. The attractive campus is undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion surge; sparkling new buildings such as a new student center and facilities building reflect the new look. More new buildings and improvements are on the horizon.
