Overview

Master of Science in Information Media at St. Cloud State University

The Master of Science in Information Media program at St. Cloud State University builds and strengthens students' competencies in librarianship, education and information technology, instructional systems design, and message design and delivery. The program, which can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, includes 3 specializations: information technologies, educational media, and instructional design and training.

Each specialization has 3 plans ---- A, B, or, C ---- and the same research and core courses. Application and elective courses, however, are specific to each specialty area.

Students in Plan A each complete 42 credits of coursework including a thesis, whereas students in Plan B each complete a starred paper and 39 credits of coursework. Students in Plan C also complete 39 credits, but they create portfolios.

Course Formats

Courses are offered in the evening during the academic year, and most of them are held during summer sessions. Additionally, some courses can be completed online.

MS Information Media Program -- Core and Elective Courses

Students complete core courses, which include "Information Media," "Instructional Design," and "Access to Information," "Developing Skills for Online Learning," and "Design and Preparation of Multimedia Presentations 1."

Students work with their advisers to select elective courses from related fields, general study offerings, and courses in the major.

MS Information Media -- Information Technologies Specialization

The information technologies specialization builds on the technology certificate program. It is ideal for individuals who want to increase their use of information and instructional technologies in schools and classrooms.

It is also designed for people who are interested in building careers in information technologies in business, government, and industry settings.

Application courses include "Design and Preparation of Multimedia Presentations II," "Technologies in the Workplace," and "Social Implications and Human Factors in Information Technology."

MS Information Media -- Educational Media Specialization

The education media specialization prepares students for licensure as school library media specialists, particularly in public K-12 educational settings. Application courses include "Technologies in the Workplace," "School Library Media Program," and "Media Selection and Evaluation for Children and Young Adults." Additional application courses are "Reading, Listening and Viewing Guidance;" "Organization of Information Resources;" and "Administration of Media."

MS Information Media - Instructional Design and Training Specialization

The MS Information Media instructional design and training specialization can be completed entirely online. It prepares individuals for careers in human performance technology or training management in the business, industrial, governmental, and health sectors. Students develop or strengthen competencies in problem analysis, program development, resource management, personnel and performance evaluation, and instructional design.

Application courses include "Design and Preparation of Multimedia Presentations II," "Training/Human Resource Development," and "Principles of Instructional Design II." Additional application courses are "Organizational Training and Media Management" as well as "Internship in Media."

Graduate Certificate Programs in Information Media

The Department of Information Media also offers 3 graduate certificate programs in information media. The 15-credit Library Media Specialist Certificate is intended for individuals who are not interested in pursuing master's degrees but are seeking licensure as library media specialists.

Furthermore, the Instructional Technology Certificate complements other majors, particularly in education and business. It is designed for people who are interested in continuing education that strengthens their skills.

In addition, the Design for E-Learning Certificate increases individuals' skills with distributed learning technologies in business, government, industry, and school settings. This certificate also complements other majors, particularly education majors, and can be used for continuing education.

Financial Assistance at St. Cloud State University

St. Cloud State University provides financial assistance for graduate students including assistantships, scholarships, loans, student employment, and research funding. International students may qualify for assistantships, scholarships, and research funding.

Graduate assistantships consisting of 20 hours a week for the academic year. Reward: 8-credits of tuition waiver for both fall and spring semester and a $10,000 salary (stipend).

Faculty

St. Cloud State University faculty members are experts in teaching, leadership, and other education-related fields, and they bring practical as well as scholarly experience to the classroom.

Faculty members have a wide-variety of research interests including distance education and online instruction, technology and learning, information literacy, instructional design, interlibrary loan, and electronic services in libraries.

For example, Professor Jeanne L. Anderson, CPT, EdD, has held positions as an instructional designer and educational technologist. She is also a prolific researcher whose interests include instructional technology, visual literacy, and online learning.

Student Research at St. Cloud State University

St. Cloud State University is committed to supporting both student and faculty member research that enhances the educational experience. To this end, the Office of Sponsored Programs funds students' academic research.

In addition, faculty members mentor students in conducting research to meet their academic and professional interests and goals.
