Overview

Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook offers courses of study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The emphasis of the graduate program is on research. Upon arrival at Stony Brook, each new student meets with a faculty adviser to choose appropriate course work. During the first semester, new students get to know the faculty members through courses, departmental activities, and a research seminar in which the faculty members describe their research programs. Students choose a faculty research adviser at the end of the first semester, and many begin their research projects in the second semester.

The faculty members at Stony Brook have diverse backgrounds and research interests, with a significant emphasis on interdisciplinary research. Students have access to research projects in the broad range of chemistry fields, including biological, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as studies at the interfaces of chemistry and other disciplines (materials science, physics, molecular biology, pharmacology, earth and space science, computer science, and others). Several faculty members have joint appointments with other University departments or with Brookhaven National Laboratory. Students have the option of pursuing a degree with a concentration in chemical biology or chemical physics, if desired. In addition, nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory provide many opportunities for collaborative research.

The graduate program is individually tailored to each student, with students finishing in four to six years. Graduates pursue careers both in industry and in academia, including undergraduate and research institutions.

Research Facilities

Graduate students at Stony Brook have access to excellent research facilities. The Chemistry Building is a modern, seven-story, 170,000-square-foot structure designed for research and advanced teaching. Student and faculty offices overlook the densely wooded campus and Long Island Sound.

In-house services include the machine shop and electronics shop, as well as a mass spectrometry facility with GC/MS, FAB, and TOF-MS capabilities. The NMR facility provides equipment for standard analytical characterization as well as sophisticated solution and solid-state experiments and includes 250-, 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-MHz instruments.

The Chemistry Library, located in the Chemistry Building, maintains subscriptions to 240 journals, with online access to ninety-two, and provides 24-hour access to databases such as Beilstein Commander, SciFinder, and the Science Citation Index.

Student Group

The chemistry graduate program includes 155 students, of whom approximately 40 percent are women. Students in the program come from across the U.S. and a dozen other countries. The Department values a diverse student body, united in their excitement about chemistry.

Student Outcomes

Graduates from Stony Brook's Department of Chemistry go on to top industrial and academic positions. Recent graduates have taken research positions at companies such as Merck, Pfizer, and Duracell; postdoctoral positions at research institutions such as Berkeley, Harvard, Oxford, and Sloan-Kettering; and faculty positions at schools such as Manhattan College, the University of North Carolina, Florida State University, and City College, CUNY.
