Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University, one of the top ranked universities in the world, offers graduate students a strong foundation in engineering practice and scientific research. Technological innovation is a key focus in the department, and graduate students have the chance to take part in research on a wide array of cutting-edge technologies. Examples include energy harvesting, the development of energy-efficient technologies including fuel cells and photovoltaic technologies, and laser-material interactions.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has produced a number of distinguished alumni, including Dr. Salvatore Torquato, the Director of the Complex Materials Group at Princeton University; Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Platform Solutions and Emerging Business at Autodesk; Anand Asundi, Editor in Chief, Int J. of Optics and Lasers in Engineering; and Hareesh Tippur, Editor in Chief, J. Experimental Mechanics. Many other alumni have gone on to successful careers in various areas of mechanical engineering.

Many of the Department of Mechanical Engineering's graduate courses are held in the late afternoon or evening to allow for flexible scheduling and additional involvement in rigorous research activity.

Graduate Degrees Focus on 3 Key Concentration Areas

Graduate degrees offered in the Department of Mechanical Engineering include Master of Science (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees with concentrations in 3 general areas: mechanical design, solid mechanics, and thermal sciences and fluid mechanics.

Within each area of concentration, students may focus on experimental, analytical, or computational aspects of the concentration. Other key areas of research activity in the department include computational mechanics, experimental mechanics, and heat transfer, mechatronics, and advanced energy systems.

The M.S. program is also offered as an option for undergraduate students as part of a combined 5-year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.)/M.S. program. Training at the master's level prepares students for careers in industry, business, or government.

The Ph.D. program further prepares students for professional academic or research positions at universities, national laboratories, in government, and in industrial research facilities.

Energy Technologies Program

Stony Brook offers an Energy Technologies program that trains students to develop innovative energy production, transfer, and storage technologies to build a sustainable future. Students who enter this program are awarded an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

The program, which can be completed in 12 months, provides hands-on laboratory and design experience in projects involving heat pumps, insulation, solar thermal, photovoltaics, wind turbines, fuel cells, and thermoelectrics. Courses within the Energy Technologies program include Energy Technology Thermodynamics, Building Energy Dynamics and Technology, Emerging Energy Technologies, and HVAC.

Mechanical Engineering Research Labs

The Department of Mechanical Engineering supports a variety of well-funded research labs that are involved in state-of-the-art innovation and development. In the Computational Design Kinematics laboratory, for instance, projects involve robotics and manufacturing automation, as well as mechanical system design and simulation.

Recent projects have included a National Science Foundation (NSF) project to develop an integrated computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing system to assist in the design and manufacturing of kinematic freeform surfaces.

The Laboratory for Experimental Mechanics Research involves the development of novel experimental stress analysis techniques with spatial resolution ranging from macro to nanometers.

Other laboratories include the Optical Metrology Laboratory, the Bio-Mechanics Laboratory, and the Computational Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics Lab.

Thermal-Laser Laboratory

The Thermal-Laser laboratory recently won a National Science Foundation grant to develop thermoelectric devices for automotive exhaust systems. The lab's 3-year program is focused on the development of thermoelectric materials using thermal spray and laser processing technologies that can be fabricated onto exhaust system components to boost fuel efficiency.

Mechatronics and Energy Harvesting Laboratory

Dynamics, control, and energy harvesting are the research focus of this laboratory. Current projects include (1) a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project to establish a dual-functional approach to efficiently harvest large amount of energy and, at the same time, effectively control the wind-induced vibration of building structures; (2) a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) funded project to design and develop new electromagnetic regenerative shock absorbers to harvest energy from vehicle suspensions, which is traditionally dissipated by viscous dampers; (3) a National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), and NYSERDA funded project on thermoelectric energy recovery from vehicle exhaust systems (together with Thermal-Laser Laboratory); (4) other research including piezoelectric smart structures and railway energy harvesting.

Microfluidics and Interfacial Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

The laboratory is aimed at developing the science and engineering of small-scale flows to new potentials. Research topics include advanced micro-fabrication techniques, small-scale transport processes, multiphase flows, wetting dynamics, and miscible microflows. Laboratory goals include the development of innovative microfluidic systems into diagnostic, manufacturing, and delivery tools for a wide range of fluids.

Admission/Financial Aid

Applicants to Department of Mechanical Engineering graduate programs at Stony Brook University should have an undergraduate grade average of at least a B or equivalent and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field such as another engineering discipline, physical science, or mathematics. All applicants must have appropriate GRE scores.

Most Ph.D. students receive financial support in the form of teaching or research assistantships, which include full tuition and a stipend. M.S. students typically are admitted without financial aid. Once students arrive on campus, however, they may apply for aid available through the New York state SPIR program. The SPIR program links students with positions in local industry and industrial projects.

The Mechanical Engineering department is part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), which consists of seven academic departments, as well as the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center.

Home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, Stony Brook University is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore. Our 1,100 acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County's only academic medical center.
