Overview

School of Social Welfare

The School of Social Welfare is committed to a society organized around the principles of equality, human dignity, and social justice. In fulfillment of this mission, it offers a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree for advanced social work practice and a social work and law dual degree (M.S.W./J.D.) with the Touro Law Center. Also available is a doctoral program leading to a Ph.D. degree, which emphasizes policy and research in the field of health and mental health and prepares students for careers in social welfare research, teaching, and policy analysis.

The M.S.W. program generally requires two years (64 credits) and combines classroom study with field placements in social welfare agencies. The curriculum provides students with the theoretical and practice expertise needed to function with maximum competence at different administrative or policy levels in social welfare and in the provision of direct services to individuals, families, groups, and communities. The first year is a generalist foundation year. In the second year, students concentrate in advanced social work practice. In addition to the regular full-time two-year program, the School has two alternative pathways that extend the time necessary to earn the degree, as well as one specialization in health with subspecializations in alcohol and substance abuse or public health and another specialization in student-community development. Completion of the course work for the Ph.D. program requires three years full-time or four years part-time. A total of 54 course credits are required for the doctorate, including both research and teaching practicums under faculty mentorship before the writing and defense of the dissertation.

Research Facilities

The School of Social Welfare is located within the Health Sciences Center, which includes the University Hospital and the Medical School as well as the Schools of Dental Medicine, Nursing, and Health Technology and Management. These facilities offer a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary practice and research experience at both the master's and doctoral levels. The Health Sciences Center Library contains approximately 275,000 volumes in social welfare and the health sciences. Students may also utilize the 1.7 million volumes of the University's Frank Melville, Jr. Memorial Library for related areas of inquiry. In addition, computer labs are located both in the Health Sciences Center and at other sites on campus.

Student Group

In the most recent demographic analysis, the M.S.W. program had 355 full-time students and 11 part-time students, including 310 women. One hundred thirteen students, or 31 percent of the School, were members of minority groups: 64 African Americans, 14 Asian Americans, and 35 Latinos/Hispanics. The average age of students in the M.S.W. program is 30. The doctoral program admits up to 8 full-time and 4 part-time students each year. Its composition is diverse.

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the M.S.W. program hold a wide variety of positions in social welfare. They are employed as social workers in schools, in hospitals, and in facilities dealing with substance abuse. Graduates do counseling in community agencies for different populations, including young people, victims of domestic violence, and the aged. They also advocate and do policy-related work in all these arenas. The Ph.D. program trains students for positions in the field of social welfare as teachers, researchers, and policy analysts.
