Overview

School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, which includes the Marine Sciences Research Center (MSRC) and the Institute for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres (ITPA), offers a Ph.D. degree in marine and atmospheric sciences with specialization in either marine sciences or atmospheric sciences.

A typical program of study begins with a coordinated set of core courses covering fundamental principles of marine or atmospheric sciences. At the same time, students are encouraged to join an ongoing research activity to help identify an area of specialization. Approximately five years are required to complete the Ph.D.

Oceanographic research and teaching at MSRC focus on collaborative, interdisciplinary study of oceanographic processes. MSRC researchers combine biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanographic approaches to examine a wide range of issues, including biogeochemical cycling, coastal environmental health, and resource conservation. An important focus of the center is regional coastal problems, such as coastal habitat alteration, diseases of marine animals, harmful algal blooms, and the effects of contaminants on biota. MSRC equally emphasizes the study of global oceanographic processes, including responses to climate change, and faculty members at MSRC are currently carrying out research in all the world's ocean areas. A wide variety of approaches are employed, including shipboard sampling, remote sensing, field and laboratory experiments, laboratory analyses, and computer modeling and simulation. Atmospheric research at ITPA draws on knowledge of mathematics, physics, and chemistry and aims to increase understanding of the atmospheres of Earth and other planets. Completion of the atmospheric sciences concentration requires a thorough understanding of the principles of atmospheric science, coupled with the ability to apply that knowledge to significant problems. Research is conducted at various temporal and spatial scales, from the daily evolution of the atmospheric state--weather--to longer-scale climate variability, including those changes associated with El Nino and global warming. Comprehensive data sets from satellites, field experiments, laboratory measurements, and meteorological observations are analyzed in the context of global three-dimensional weather and climate models and simplified conceptual models. A key goal is to achieve better understanding of the physical bases of numerical weather forecasting and climate prediction, including the size and timing of future greenhouse warming. Research Facilities

Facilities at MSRC are modern and comprehensive and support a wide range of oceanographic research. Major shared-use facilities include the R/V Seawolf, a 24-meter research ship; two running seawater laboratories, the Flax Pond Marine Laboratory and the Marine Sciences Facility at Stony Brook Southampton; a multibeam echosounder for detailed seabed mapping; a laser ablation/inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS); a liquid chromatograph/time of flight/mass spectrometer (LC/TOF/MS); and an analytical facility for CHN and nutrient analyses. A 'clean' laboratory and environmental incubators are also available. Individual research laboratories contain facilities for a wide range of biological, chemical, physical, and geological research. The Center is also the home of the Marine Animal Disease Laboratory, a diagnostic and research center equipped with facilities needed to culture and evaluate marine pathogens and host responses.

The Institute for Terrestrial and Planetary Atmospheres' computer facilities include several high-end multiple-processor Alpha UNIX stations, plus a large network of PC, UNIX, Linux, and Macintosh computers, printers, graphics terminals, and hard-copy plotters. The recent acquisition of an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer by Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory provides unparalleled computing speed for modeling efforts. The institute maintains a comprehensive system to display real-time weather data, satellite measurements, and numerical model products. It has a state-of-the-art weather laboratory and remote sensing laboratory. The spectroscopy laboratories have infrared (grating) spectrometers, low-temperature absorption cells, a tunable diode laser spectrometer, and a high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometer. A stable isotope mass spectrometer is maintained in the atmospheric isotope laboratory. Students have access to millimeter-wavelength remote-sensing equipment, developed at Stony Brook, and to data from NASA missions.

Student Group

Approximately 90 graduate students are engaged in research in marine sciences, and about 20 are in atmospheric sciences.
