Master's Degree Programs in Nutrition Science at Syracuse University Falk College

The master's degree programs in nutrition science at Syracuse University integrate theory with application to provide comprehensive training in the field. These programs allow students to create individualized courses of study that reflect their academic interests and career goals. In addition to the MA or MS program, a student can choose to follow the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) pathway, which leads to DPD verification.

Upon graduation, students build rewarding careers as researchers and teachers as well as practitioners in clinical, community, educational, government, and private settings. They may also pursue exciting careers in non-traditional fields like business, journalism, marketing, public relations, and sales. Students pursuing the didactic RD credential are eligible to apply for a competitive national dietetic internship.

Program Curricula

The M.A. in Nutrition Science degree program consists of 36 credits of coursework, and the M.S. in Nutrition Science degree program consists of 30 credits and a thesis. Both programs include a comprehensive exam.

Program curricula include 15 to 18 credits of core courses, 0 to 9 credits of special interest courses, and 0 to 9 credits of additional nutrition courses. It also includes 6 to 18 credits of supporting area courses, which can be drawn from any field that supports the total program.


Core courses include "Food, Culture, and Environment;" "Vitamins and Minerals;" and "Metabolism." "Graduate Research Methods" and "Nutritional Status Evaluation" are also core courses.

Special interest courses are "Nutrition Education," "Nutrition Counseling," "Dietetics Practice Across the Life Span," and "Seminar in Food and Nutrition." Additional courses are "Medical Nutrition Therapy I and Lab," "Medical Nutrition Therapy II and Lab," and "Field Experience in Community Nutrition."

Additional nutrition courses include, but are not limited to, "Readings in Foods," "Issues in Community Nutrition," "Readings in Nutrition," "Field Experience in Community Nutrition," "Food and Public Policy," and "Problems in Human Metabolism."

Comprehensive Examination

The comprehensive examination consists of an essay test regarding advanced topics in nutrition and an oral examination.

M.S. in Nutrition Science Degree Program Thesis

The thesis involves investigating of a specific topic; comprehensive examination and interpretation of literature about the topic; and clear, logical presentation of results. Students choose topics based their coursework and interests. It may take them an additional year after completing all courses to finish the thesis.

Beyond Graduate Study

The M.A. and M.S. degree programs in nutrition science allow individuals to pursue careers in a variety of areas including community nutrition, dietetics, nutrition/fitness, and research.

The programs also enable students who are not registered dietitians to complete the necessary coursework for academic verification from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Verification allows them to pursue supervised practice programs or dietetic internships.

Following this experience, students are eligible to sit for the national examination to become registered dietitians.

Syracuse University awards scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships for graduate study. Students may also qualify for Federal Unsubsidized Loans.

The David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics

The David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics administers the M.S. and M.A. and B.S. degree programs in Nutrition Science and Dietetics. It also offers professional graduate and undergraduate programs in "Child and Family Studies," 'Food Studies', 'Public Health', "Marriage and Family Therapy," "Social Work," and "Sport Management."

Sudha Raj, PhD, RD, has been the director of the graduate program in Nutrition Science and Dietetics since 2004. Her areas of specialization are vegetarianism, cultural food practices, and consequences of global nutrition transition. She is the co-Chair for the Workgroup on SOP/SOPP for Dietitians in Integrative & Functional

Medicine and chair for the Evidence Based Analysis Work Group on Vegetarian Diets in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Lynn S. Brann, Ph.D., R.D.N. specializes in pediatric nutrition. She is currently investigating the growth and health of adolescent gymnasts, disease risk in children, and effects of mindful eating and yoga intervention on very young children.
