Overview

Graduate Programs at The New School

The New School offers an integrated approach to graduate studies that combines theory and practical application. Working with faculty who are not only dedicated teachers but also artists, professionals, and skilled practitioners, students engage in serious academic inquiry that prepares them to enter their respective fields as experts. Currently, more than 3,500 students are enrolled in graduate-level work.

Graduate programs at The New School encourage students to be globally aware and engaged as citizens of the world, which is reflected in the cross-disciplinary approach to many programs of study. Ideally situated in the urban landscape of New York City, students study, live, and practice in the epicenter of culture, politics, business, media, publishing, art, design, and theater.

A broad range of more than 40 programs within 6 schools of study compose the graduate-level education at The New School, including programs in music, drama, writing, social research, public policy, liberal studies, and design.

The New School for Social Research

Graduate students enrolled in programs at The New School for Social Research are encouraged to take an interdisciplinary approach to their studies and engage with other departments within the school to broaden their intellectual endeavors and deepen their understanding of their field.

Programs offered through the school include master's and doctoral degrees in anthropology, economics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology, and master's degrees in global political economy and finance, historical studies, and liberal studies.

The New School for Public Engagement

The New School for Public Engagement is home to graduate programs in creative writing, media studies, and teaching English to speakers of other languages. It is also home to the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy, where students deepen their understanding of what it takes to become successful managers or policy makers in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors by learning through a mixture of history, theory, and practice.

Milano offers master's degrees in international affairs, nonprofit management, organization change management, urban policy analysis and management, and environmental policy and sustainability management, as well as post-master's certificates in organizational development, leadership and change, and sustainability strategies, and a PhD in Public and Urban Policy.

The New School's MFA program in creative writing offers concentrations in fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and writing for children. It boasts a faculty of successful published authors and often offers classes from distinguished visiting writers.

In addition to a career-focused MA program in media studies, The New School for Public Engagement' offers graduate certificate options in both documentary media studies, which is a 1-year, full-time program, and media management, which is offered online and on campus. Both certificates offer the option to transfer credit to the master's program.

The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), offers two concentrations, teaching and curriculum development. The program can be completed entirely online or in conjunction with a summer residency on campus in New York City.

Parsons The New School for Design

The graduate programs at Parsons nurture students' imaginations and help them develop their unique point of view while also applying a critical eye to their work, setting them up for successful careers. A network of experimental design laboratories and research institutes allows students to collaborate with faculty members and peers from Parsons and other New School graduate programs, while also allowing students to connect with external partners and explore unique learning opportunities outside of the classroom.

Parsons is composed of five design schools: the School of Design Strategies; the School of Art, Media, and Technology; the School of Art and Design History and Theory; the School of Constructed Environments; and the School of Fashion. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively within the five schools.

Parsons offers master's degree programs (MA, MFA, and MArch) in architecture, design and technology, fine arts, interior design, lighting design, history of decorative arts and design, photography, fashion design, fashion studies, and transdisciplinary design. Parsons also offers a dual degree in architecture and lighting design.

Parsons has several new graduate programs in development, including an MS in Urban Design Ecologies, MA in Theories of Urban Practice, and MA in Design Studies.

Mannes College The New School for Music

A classical musical conservatory near some of New York City's leading performance venues, Mannes College offers two tracks of graduate study, a master's degree in music and a professional studies diploma. Both tracks are full time over the course of a two-year, four-semester program.

The Master of Music program offers advanced instruction as well as performance and technique classes to provide a broad range of musical expertise while the professional studies diploma offers a personalized curriculum of advanced private study.

For both degree programs, concentrations are available in orchestral instruments, piano, harpsichord, vocal accompaniment for pianists, orchestral and choral conducting, voice, classical guitar, composition, and theory.

The New School for Drama

The New School for Drama offers an intensive three-year MFA program in theater with concentrations in acting, directing, and playwriting. The craft-focused program is meant to train students as professional artists who will graduate ready to embark on successful careers.

A collaborative approach in the program offers students the chance to work with each other -- the writers revising scripts during rehearsals, the directors and actors working closely to develop productions.

Students begin their study by honing their talent and practicing their skills, which eventually culminates in the final year in a full-scale production in which they act, write, or direct.
