The University of Alabama College of Commerce and Business Administration offers flexible graduate degree programs, designed for adult learners competing in the global marketplace. Bloomberg Businessweek ranked the University of Alabama among the top 6 percent of public institutions.
Students may choose from such innovative online majors as the Master of Arts (MA) in Management, with a concentration in global business management; the Master of Science (MS) in Operations Management; and the combined MS in Nursing and MA in Management with an emphasis on global business.
Global Management Focus
The MA in Management, with its global business focus, enables line managers, mid-level supervisors, administrators, military personnel, and human resource managers to develop their employee management skills within the international business environment. Course subject areas include: accounting for global management, economics for global management, international marketing, global leadership and ethics, and global business.
The program consists of 30 hours of coursework. No thesis is required.
Quantitative Approach to Operations Management
The University of Alabama's online MS in Operations Management prepares students to use quantitative tools to analyze and design business operations and make decisions effectively. Graduates are able to apply their skills and knowledge to critical business processes such as service operations, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, logistics, and supply chain management.
Specialized coursework for this degree encompasses such technical subjects as statistical methods, management science and spreadsheet modeling, supply chain modeling and analysis, operations scheduling problems, inventory management, manufacturing scheduling and control systems, and systems simulation.
Online students have a similar educational experience as their on-campus counterparts, with access to pre-recorded class lectures and a course schedule synchronized with the university's semester calendar. The degree and course requirements are identical to the on-campus program. This flexible format allows students to take just 2 courses a semester, completing the degree in less than 2 years.
The University of Alabama has several affiliated research centers of interest to operations management students, including the Alabama Productivity Center, the Supply Chain Institute, and the Center for Business and Economic Research.
Nursing and Management Dual Degree
The Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Arts in Management with an emphasis on global business is a unique dual enrollment degree offered through Bama's Capstone College of Nursing and the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration.
The goal of the program is to train nursing leaders and managers in the areas of global nursing case management and health care management. The degree prepares nurse professionals to manage human and financial resources, inventory, and business processes within organizations that provide health services for national and international populations.
In this program, nurse leaders will take internationally-focused classes on subjects such as advanced nursing practice with global populations, international business management, issues in community health for global populations, human relations management, business global management, and global leadership and business case management.
For their capstone projects, each student in this program is required to complete both a clinical practicum and a culminating academic exercise.
The online dual enrollment program consists of 54 credit hours and can be completed in two years of full-time study. Part-time study is also available. Students have 6 years to complete the program.
Many Scholarship Opportunities
Online courses are considered face-to-face courses for financial aid purposes -- as such, there is a great deal of scholarship opportunities available to distance students. In fact, there are over 30 scholarship funds specifically available for these learners. Students enrolled in distance degree programs are also eligible to apply for federal financial aid.
Honor Society for Adult and Non-traditional Students
Bama is a participating institution in Pinnacle, a national honor society for adult and non-traditional students, who are often prevented from earning typical campus academic, service, or leadership honors due to work and family responsibilities.
To be eligible for membership in Pinnacle, graduate students must have completed at least 12 graduate hours each, possess GPAs of 3.4 or better; be 25 years of age or older, or qualify as a non-traditional students (single parent or married), and be involved in at least 2 campus and/or community activities in leadership roles.
Special Facilities for Distance Learners
The University of Alabama is mindful of the particular needs of distance students and has prepared a number of helpful video and print tutorials to explain the ins and outs of online activities and interactions. These support tools provide instructions for taking online assessments, submitting assignments online, using online calendars, chat, discussion boards, accessing help, logging out, and using the e-mail system.
There is also a special Web site on library services for distance learners that provides a distance learning guide along with links to special library services, technical help, and research tools.
