Overview

The Department of Computer Science offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. The Department has 23 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 74 masters and, 61 doctoral students. Faculty and students conduct research in algorithms, bioinformatics, computer and information security, computer architecture, computer networks, databases, high performance computing, parallel and distributed systems, programming languages and compilers, image processing, computer vision, and software engineering among others. Faculty research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Army Research Office (ARO), Rackspace, NEC Labs, and other organizations.

M.S. in COMPUTER SCIENCE

The M.S. program provides a broad education in Computer Science. For interested students M.S. concentrations in Software Engineering and the Computer and Information Security are offered. This degree can be earned on either a full-time or a part-time basis. The Department has 74 M.S students and has graduated 87 students in the last 3 years. Ph.D. in COMPUTER SCIENCE

The doctoral program provides a broad education and extensive research experience in addition to broad background in Computer Science. Students may pursue research in several areas including security, cloud computing, image processing, real-time systems, networking, software engineering and virtual reality. The Department currently has 61 Ph.D. students and has graduated 32 students in the last 3 years.

Application deadlines for spring and fall applications are October 1 and February 1, respectively.

FINANCIAL AID

The Department of Computer Science offers graduate assistantships for most incoming Ph.D. students. All continuing Ph.D. students making satisfactory progress on their doctoral degrees are offered research assistantships. In addition, various scholarships and grader positions are available for M.S. students.

TOP RANKED CYBERSECURITY PROGRAM

The University of Texas at San Antonio cyber security programs was ranked in 2013 the ¿best in the nation¿, according to a national survey of 2000 certified information technology security professionals. UTSA faculty from departments across the university conduct interdisciplinary research in cybersecurity. In addition, the Institute for Cybersecurity (ICS) and the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) promote research in cybersecurity.

CLOUD AND BIGDATA LABORATORY

The Cloud and Big Data Laboratory in the UTSA College of Sciences has one of the largest Open Clouds in academia with 6,600 COREs utilizing OpenStack software and Open Compute hardware to support advanced computing and big-data analytics research. The laboratory was built in collaboration with industry partners including Rackspace, Open Compute Project Communities, Mellanox, Internet2 and many others.

FACILITIES

Research facilities include many state-of-the-art computer labs and classrooms, parallel computer clusters, wireless networks and hundreds of PCs and workstations. The Department has moved into a new building that provides state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities for students and faculty. It is designed according to the needs of the Computer Science Department. In addition to Department facilities, the college and the university have many academic and recreational facilities that are open to faculty and students.

Computer Science alumni conduct research and enjoy rewarding careers at top companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, Dell, Hewlett Packard, AT&T, Rackspace, USAA and Southwest Research Institute.

SAN ANTONIO

The University of Texas at San Antonio is the largest of six universities in San Antonio, growing fast with over 32,000 students. Located in South Texas, San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the USA with over a million people and the home to the Alamo, the River Walk, and the five-time NBA Champions, San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio is 75 miles from Austin, and is a morning's drive from both Houston and the great beaches of the Gulf Coast. For most of the year, San Antonio offers warm, short-sleeve weather. The city borders a scenic Texas Hill Country with its quaint small-town restaurants and shops and opportunities for hiking and river tubing.
