A Biomedical Graduate Program at a Top Research University

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is the largest healthcare nexus in South Texas, with over 100 affiliated hospitals, clinics, and laboratories across the Rio Grande Valley. UTHSCSA is South Texas's only tier 1 Research University. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio rates 1st in the nation for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for aging research, in the top 10 in NIH funding grants for cellular and structural biology, and in the top 20 in funding for physiology. Just this year UTHSCSA was part of the consortium awarded a $45M grant from the Department of Defence and the Veterans Administration to study Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a $22.7M grant for the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA)

UTHSCSA has been named a National Center of Excellence for Women's Health by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Exciting Interdisciplinary Programs

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences pulls faculty members from the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, and departments of biology, biochemistry, and bioengineering to create a unique interdisciplinary learning atmosphere. The school offers 8 Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs, 6 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs, a D.D.S./Ph.D. program, and an M.D./Ph.D. program with and without residency options.

A Unique Multidisciplinary Biomedical Ph.D. Program at UTHSCSA

The flagship doctoral program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is the Integrated Multidisciplinary Graduate Program. In this program, student may pursue research in areas including Cancer Biology, Aging, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Physiology. Additionally, UTHSCSA offers Ph.D. programs in the fields of biomedical engineering, nursing, radiological sciences, and translational sciences. Students are also encouraged to pursue careers outside the "typical" reseach. Successful Ph.D. students each complete and defend an original research dissertation.

The M.D./Ph.D. Program

The M.D./Ph.D.is a dual degree program, with a curriculum at UTHSCSA comprising a 7-year program aimed at preparing graduates for laboratory or population-based research in the fields of aging, cancer cardiovascular disease, neurological and psychiatric disorders neurodegenerative diseases, obesity and diabetes, and infectious diseases.

Students pursuing a Ph.D. in Radiological Sciences degree program may also complete a residency M.D./Ph.D., completing their residency in radiology, radiation oncology, or psychiatry.

Sterling Facilities in Biomedical Science at University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio

A new 190,000 square foot building, the South Texas Research Facility is the centerpiece of the programs in biomedical sciences at UTHSCSA. Research centers within the facility include the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, a world leader in gerontology research.

Other centers include The San Antonio Cancer Institute, the Center for Biomedical Neuroscience, the Institute for the Integration of Medicine and Science, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and the office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization.
