Union Institute & University (UI&U) graduate degree programs are grounded in real-life application and designed to prepare graduates to effect change on a regional, national, and global level. UI&U learners and alumni serve their communities as leaders within government, business, nonprofit management, education, the social sciences, and the field of criminal justice, and daily reflect the university's vision: to engage, enlighten, and empower highly motivated adults in their pursuit of a lifetime of learning and service.

UI&U offers master's-level programs that help learners advance within their careers through a variety of learning options, including online, low-residency, and hybrid course delivery.

The UI&U Master of Arts Online Program

The UI&U Master of Arts Online program attracts learners who seek academic experiences with faculty who serve as leaders in their fields. Offerings include a wide range of concentrations: Creativity Studies, Education, Health & Wellness, History & Culture, Leadership, Public Policy & Social Issues, Literature & Writing, and Psychology.

Because classes are offered solely online, learners have the flexibility to earn an advanced degree while managing professional and personal responsibilities, such as career and family.

The UI&U Master of Education Program

The UI&U Master of Education program, offered online or in a low-residency format in Florida and Vermont, prepares new leaders to better inform and advance the field of education. Many current learners and graduates are primary and secondary school teachers and administrators, nonprofit education staff and executives, and those simply concerned with preparing the world's children with the best possible educational options.

The UI&U M.Ed. program also prepares graduates for certification or licensure in teaching, administration, or counseling.

The UI&U Master of Arts with Concentrations in Psychology and Counseling

The UI&U Master of Arts with concentrations in psychology and counseling educates future psychologists and counselor practitioners to indentify and treat psychological problems and issues in a variety of clinical, educational, and workplace settings.

The program is designed specifically to offer the traditional courses and supervised internship experiences that are increasingly required by state and national agencies and credentialing bodies. Working with a team of faculty advisers who possess relevant practitioner experience, learners engage in critical inquiry, thoroughly examine and interact with literature, theory, and research, and pursue and share the results of applied research.

With the exception of brief residencies held in Brattleboro, Vermont, learners work and study online or at a distance while completing their studies.

Union Institute & University's Doctoral Programs

Union Institute & University's doctoral programs are rooted in the university's fundamental commitment to provide interdisciplinary, socially relevant studies in a model that calls for learners to critically consider their studies within and beyond the classroom and then act upon that knowledge in the greater community.

Union offers a rich academic environment with an emphasis on social justice and the integration of theory and practice, guiding learners to become agents of positive intellectual and social change. This exploration of the creative process provides learners with a foundation for generating new ideas and solutions to the issues they will encounter throughout their professional and civic lives.

UI&U's Doctor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies Program

The UI&U Doctor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies program has long been a hallmark of the university. With a focus on social justice and interdisciplinary studies, the Ph.D. program draws from established academic disciplines while developing new approaches and generating essential knowledge related to critical intellectual and social issues.

Learners enrolled in the UI&U Ph.D. program may choose from three distinct areas of concentration: Ethical and Creative Leadership, Public Policy and Social Change, and Humanities and Culture. A specialization in Martin Luther King, Jr. Studies is also a popular option.

Faculty members are deeply grounded in their fields and are recognized, productive scholars in their respective areas of academic expertise. The goal of the UI&U Ph.D. program is to educate scholar-practitioners who engage interdisciplinary approaches to acquire a deeply informed and integrated understanding of the practice of leadership.

Studies are completed online, with brief academic residencies held bi-annually in Cincinnati, Ohio.

UI&U's Doctor of Education Program

UI&U's Doctor of Education program offers the Ed.D. degree with specializations in Educational Leadership (Pre-K through 12) and Higher Education, both with an emphasis on ethics and social justice.

The Ed.D. program is uniquely designed to align with the needs, experiences, and interests of mid-career professionals. Learners advance through the program in a small cohort of fellow scholar-practitioners. Seminars are delivered online, in web-hosted meetings, as well as face-to-face during semi-annual residencies in Cincinnati, Ohio. Learners benefit from the program's experienced faculty and a collaborative learning environment, developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills they need to advance their careers.

The UI&U Doctor of Psychology Program

The UI&U Doctor of Psychology program offers the Psy.D. degree with a concentration in clinical psychology, following a scholar-practitioner model. The program's distributed learning model, a combination of online and low-residency learning, makes it accessible to working adults who need to balance career, family, and other responsibilities.

Learners meet in small cohorts monthly and attend semi-annual academic meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Brattleboro, Vermont. Those enrolled in the UI&U Psy.D. program are trained not only to assess and treat mental health problems, but also to understand and treat problems within their sociopolitical context. These include issues related to poverty, violence, substance abuse, racism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression.

Learners in the Psy.D. program also become deeply aware of the ethical issues involved in providing psychological services.
