Dutch Ruppersberger III, owner of the Baltimore Orioles Peter Angelos, and prominent professional football agent Thomas Condon.

Exciting Changes for 2013

In April 2013 the University of Baltimore will open the new John and Frances Angelos Law Center. The new law center will bring all of the operations of the school of law under one roof. The new center is dramatic and contemporary. When it opens it will instantly become a Baltimore landmark and one of the greenest buildings in the region. It will feature innovative systems to make optimal use of air, light and water. The building symbolizes our vision of the law as a pathway toward more stable communities, stronger civic institutions, and better relations among human beings.

The new law center isn?t the only change at the school of law. The school welcomed Ronald Weich as the new dean in July 2013. Dean Weich came to the school of law from outside of academia. He has served in both the public and private sector as an attorney. Dean Weich `s experience includes serving as chief counsel to U.S. Senators Edward M. Kennedy and Majority Leader Harry Reid, eight years as a partner in a prominent law firm, and most recently he served in the Obama administration as an assistant attorney general under Attorney General Eric Holder.

Experiential Learning from the School of Law

All students at the UB School of Law are encouraged to participate in the university's many experiential learning opportunities. Clinics, externships, moot court, student fellow programs, and study abroad opportunities are designed to teach students what working in a courtroom is really like, how to build cases, what clients expect from their lawyers, and how to be effective lawyers. Students also regularly participate in externships, university centers, and other programs that focus on local, national, and global issues.

UB houses 9 clinics and 3 externship programs, which provide nearly 200 case opportunities each year. Clinics provide unmatched practical opportunities to licensed student attorneys, as well as generate significant results to low-income clients in Baltimore, Maryland, and beyond. Clinic work includes counseling, interviewing, planning case strategy, and appearing in court or administrative agencies. Externships allow students to work as closely supervised law clerks, and include the Attorney Externship, the Judicial Externship, and the EXPLOR Program.

Activities and Services Available through the School of Law

The School of Law offers several support services to students, including peer support, writing assistance, and feedback on practice exams. Skills workshops are offered throughout the year in small group settings, and address topics like note taking, briefing, and exam essay writing. In addition, students can schedule one-on-one meetings to receive feedback on their academic strengths and weaknesses, as well as any other concerns that affect their learning.

There are over 30 student organizations available through the School of Law, including the American Constitution Society, the Environmental Law Society (ELS), the Jewish Law Student Association (JLSA), Project Hunger, Sigma Delta Kappa, and University of Baltimore Students for Public Interest (UBSPI).

Outstanding Faculty in the UB School of Law

UB Law faculty members are leaders in their respective areas of law, and many are practicing lawyers and public officials who are well known for their extensive legal expertise. For example, Professor Richard W. Bourne has experience as a trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, as the director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, and as a teaching fellow at Harvard Law School. He has published extensively on his expert areas of American civil litigation, conflict of laws, and legal education.

Professor Wendy Gerzog is an expert on tax law and estate planning. She joined UB after serving as a teaching fellow at the National Law Center of the George Washington University, and has also testified before the US Senate Finance Committee and the Treasury Department.

Professor Robert Rubinson has previously served as reporter for the Maryland Court of Appeals Ethics Committee and as chair of the Maryland State Bar Association's Section Council on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. He currently serves as the director of UB's Mediation Clinic for Families.

Financial Aid Opportunities for Law Students at UB

The financial aid department at the University of Baltimore School of Law helps students invest in their educations. The Office of Law Admissions awards $1.3 million in scholarships annually, and offers students many other sources of financial assistance, including grants, loans, and work-study opportunities. Partial scholarships are available to both new full time and part time students. Students enrolled at least half time can apply for the Federal Work Study Program, which offers flexible work hours, community service opportunities, and the convenience of working close to classes.

University of Baltimore -- Knowledge that Works

Founded in 1925, today UB's schools and colleges provide real-world education in a number of specialized fields. The university uses the city as an extension of the classroom, training nonprofit leaders, assisting government agencies, offering legal research and advice, and conducting a range of community-focused projects. UB continues to grow, and yet its dedication to green building and upgrades means its carbon footprint continues to shrink.

UB is located in Baltimore, Maryland, known as "Charm City." The American Institute of Economic Research has ranked Baltimore among the top 10 college towns in the nation for its quality of life, inspiring academic environment, and professional opportunities for students and graduates. Many cultural and entertainment opportunities are available, including the Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium, historic Fells Point, many arts and music venues, and 2 professional sports stadiums.
