Rigorous Graduate Studies in Physiology and Neurobiology

The Department of Physiology and Neurobiology at the University of Connecticut provides a rigorous graduate student course of study for those who wish to earn a Master of Science (M.S.) or Ph.D. degree in neurobiology and physiology.

For students interested in physiology, the department offers major areas of study such as the evolution of physiological adaptations in higher organisms, comparative aspects of osmotic and ionic regulation in vertebrates, and transepithelial ion and water transport.

For those wishing to focus on neurobiology, areas of research include cellular and comparative neurobiology with an emphasis on neural integration of behavior patterns, synaptic transmission, developmental neurobiology, and glial cell biology.

Broad Course Work Options

In their first year, graduate students take a two-semester core course of fundamental instruction in the theories and concepts required for advanced study in physiology and neurobiology. During this period, students can choose an area of concentration and begin their dissertation research. Those who do not select an area of research may rotate through two laboratories.

Students then take advanced courses in the fields of comparative physiology, endocrinology, neurobiology, or neurosciences to complete their course work. Courses in other departments can also be taken to study subjects such as molecular and cell biology, biobehavioral sciences, and psychology.

Students who want to continue beyond the master's degree to the doctoral program are expected to write a research proposal by the end of their second year in the program, and, upon successfully defending the proposal, they are admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. program, and receive an M.S. in Physiology and Neurobiology.

The Biomedical Engineering Program

The Department of Physiology and Neurobiology partners with the School of Engineering to offer an interdisciplinary biomedical engineering program. Biomedical engineers are responsible for hip joint replacement, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), angioplasty, and kidney dialysis, and the program's goal is to train the next generation of scientists to develop such groundbreaking advances in the field of medicine.

The program offers courses in six areas: biomaterials, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation and bioimaging, clinical engineering, bioinformatics, and physiological and biomedical modeling.

UConn Faculty Involved in Cutting-Edge Research

Many distinguished faculty members support the physiology and neurobiology graduate program and have research laboratories devoted to improving the understanding of wide-ranging scientific subjects.

Laboratories run by the department's faculty focus on research including epilepsy and stroke, autism and the postsynaptic signal transduction systems of excitatory synapses, and neural stem cell biology and its application in neurodegenerative disease.

In addition to working in research laboratories and receiving mentoring from faculty within the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology, students also have the option of collaborating with faculty members in other biology departments at the university, such as the Medical School, Biotechnology Center, and Marine Research Laboratories.

Weekly Colloquium Series

Graduate students at UConn are required to take part in weekly departmental colloquium series and departmental meetings. The meetings offer students the chance to meet distinguished scientists from around the world and learn about the latest research developments in the fields of physiology and neurobiology.

The meetings also give students the opportunity to present their own research and to improve their research presentation skills.

A Top-Notch Electron Microscopy Laboratory

The Department of Physiology and Neurobiology is located in the University of Connecticut's new pharmacy/biology building. The facility is part of an ongoing, $2.3 billion program designed to elevate the University of Connecticut from its current status as the state's premier public research university to one of the best in the country.

The department's electron microscopy laboratory offers equipment, education, and training for electron microscopy research projects and courses. Graduate students can use the laboratory's state-of-the-art equipment for research including transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, analytical electron microscopy, cryogenic specimen preparation, and immunoelectron microscopy.

Students also have access to the university's recently renovated Homer Babbidge Library, notable for being New England's largest public research library.

Partnerships with Research Centers

In addition to the department's resources, UConn students have access to cutting-edge facilities housed at university research institutes associated with the department. Many of the department's faculty members are actively engaged in projects supported by these institutes.

The Biotechnology-Bioservices Center provides facilities for research including analytical ultracentrifugation, animal cell culture, DNA biotechnology, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance.

At the Center for Regenerative Biology, an interdepartmental research center, research focuses on stem cell biology, developmental biology, and related areas with the mission to translate scientific findings into therapies. The center's Stem Cell Institute opens a new $52 million building at UConn's Farmington campus in the summer of 2010 with state-of-the-art technology.

Assistance for All Ph.D. Students

Applicants to the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology must have maintained at least a 3.0 quality point ratio for admission and are required to submit scores from the General Test of Graduate Record Examinations (GRE).

All Ph.D. students in the department are awarded graduate assistantships and granted free tuition waivers. Assistantships are awarded to master's degree students on a case-by-case basis, when funding is available. Research fellowships are also available to Ph.D. candidates.

A University with Public Ivy Stature

Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut is a part of a small community of distinguished colleges and universities referred to as "Public Ivies," so named because schools like UConn offer a great education, but, in contrast to traditional Ivy League schools, are public and cost significantly less.

The central campus of the university is located in Storrs, Connecticut, with an additional five campuses close by in Stamford, Waterbury, Torrington, Groton, and West Hartford.
