University of Miami's School of Medicine Teaches a New Generation as Medical Facilities Reach Out to the City

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is a research powerhouse, achieving international recognition for breakthroughs and advanced knowledge in diabetes, cancer, spinal cord injury, AIDS, marine science, and many other areas. The University of Miami's centers of excellence are continually ranked among the nation's best, including Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and the Diabetes Research Institute. The Graduate Programs in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health are at the forefront of public health science

The Master in Public Health (MPH) degree is a professional degree for students who require a broad general academic experience in public health. Students will acquire competency in the fundamental public health disciplines. This includes research design and conduct, data analysis and policy analysis, communications, program planning and administration, public health systems and the organization of health services in the United States and Latin America, recognition and analysis of ethical issues in public health and professional practice, the needs of special populations, and the integration of these core disciplines in public health decision making.

The MPH degree provides comprehensive education in areas of knowledge basic to public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health sciences, health services administration/health economics, and social and behavioral sciences. The MPH degree is a professional degree for students who require a broad general academic experience in public health.

The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) is an academic research degree designed for students who wish to prepare for further study at the doctoral level, or to prepare for research or technical positions in government, industry, academia, or private institutions. Studies will include many of the core disciplines included in the MPH degree with an additional emphasis on advanced research methods and quantitative analysis skills.

The graduate programs are committed to transmitting the skill sets necessary to conduct effective public health research to all our students, understanding that such research may take place in academic, governmental, private sector, and international settings. Experience in public health research often involves similar skill sets as those needed by public health practitioners.

Attaining a PhD in Epidemiology involves an intensive research and training program for students with previous experience in epidemiology and/or related disciplines. This rigorous, advanced education prepares students for careers in both medical- and health-related research, and enables physicians and others with existing degrees to integrate the latest epidemiological research and methodologies into their current careers. Primarily intended for people with MPH degrees, the PhD in Epidemiology program is open to physicians and others with master's or doctoral degrees in related disciplines.

Also offered are a number of joint degrees undertaken with other schools and programs in the university.
