The Master of Arts in Industrial and Organizational Psychology

The focus of the Master of Arts in Industrial and Organizational Psychology (MAIOP) at the University of New Haven is to prepare students to increase productivity and satisfaction in the work place. In addition to the strong theoretical background provided by the program, students benefit from the array of human resource and applied psychological associations with which the MAIOP program is affiliated.

The MAIOP program at the University of New Haven is a 48-credit program designed for students who've completed their undergraduate degrees and who wish to enter the field, professionals currently working in the field, and students who are pursuing doctoral degrees. Full-time students can complete their degrees in less than a year and a half; part-time students finish the degree in less than 2 years. This flexibility allows students with various needs the ability to attain their degrees.

The program meets the standards of The Council of Applied Master's Programs in Psychology.

Faculty

The faculty members of the Master of Arts in Industrial and Organizational Psychology program are not only educators with advanced degrees of their own but researchers and professionals with years of experience in the fields of industrial and organizational psychology.

Dr. Gordon Simerson's research includes managing people in creative fields, procedural justice and organizational ethics, and spirituality in the work environment. Before joining the faculty at the University of New Haven, Dr. Tara L'Heureux-Barrett worked for a private corporation performing job analysis and selection test development, and designing performance appraisal systems. Dr. Michael Morris, one of several published authors on the faculty, has twice won the University of New Haven's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The MAIOP Comprehensive Course of Study

Students begin their study of industrial and organizational psychology by completing 24 credits in the 8 core courses, which provide a solid theoretical foundation. The core courses include Psychometrics and Statistics, Industrial Motivation and Morale, Organizational Behavior, Research Methods, and Psychological Tests and Measurements in Industry.

After consulting with the program coordinator, students choose 1 of 3 ways to complete their remaining 24 credits: students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree should follow the thesis track, allowing significant development of research and organizational skills; students who wish to apply their theoretical knowledge to the work place may participate in an internship or a practicum (for those students already working in the field).

A project report incorporating the student's course work, research, and practical experience is required. The third option available to students is to earn 24 credits by completing various electives, allowing students to develop a broad basis of knowledge. A comprehensive exam is required.

Though not required, students may focus their studies in 1 of 3 areas of concentration: Industrial-Human Resources Psychology, Organizational Development and Consultation, or Psychology of Conflict Management.

Internships and Professional Training

Students enrolled in the MAIOP program are highly encouraged to join the school's chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management. The society sponsors events and hosts speakers and is associated with the Human Resources Association of Greater New Haven. Once a month, the association holds dinners for the chapter, providing students with the opportunity to foster mentor relationships, discuss job-shadowing possibilities, and develop useful contacts in the human resources community.

Members of the Society for Human Resource Management have secured internships at an array of companies in a variety of fields, including HBO, Yale University, Pitney Bowes, General Electric, Marriott Hotels, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and Cigna. Society members have also found job shadowing opportunities with Inline Plastics, The Essex Group, and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

MAIOP students have the opportunity to receive mediation and negotiation training from the university's Center for Dispute Resolution. The center provides mediation services for students, faculty, and staff.

Career Opportunities

MAIOP graduates have gone on to positions in public and private corporations, including Fortune 500 companies, consulting firms, and government posts. Most students find jobs within 1-3 months after completing their degrees.

Certificates

The certificate in applications of psychology is designed for working professionals who desire more extensive training and education in a focused area of study. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree, though it does not need to be in psychology. Students must complete 12 credits, which may include classes such as Life Span Developmental Psychology, Personnel Development and Training, or Organizational Change and Development.

The psychology of conflict management certificate is also a 12-credit program designed for working professionals. This certificate focuses on the development of mediation and negotiation skills. Classes include The Psychology of Conflict Management, Multicultural Issues in the Workplace, and Psychology of Communication and Opinion Change.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the MAIOP program should hold undergraduate degrees from accredited universities or colleges. While a psychology degree is not required, applicants should have an introductory-level understanding of psychological principles and concepts. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL scores or proof of ESL certification.

Financial Aid

Full-time students are encouraged to apply for graduate assistantships. An administrative, research, or teaching assistantship qualifies a student for a 50 percent reduction in tuition, as well as an opportunity to earn wages. Students with assistantships usually work 15-20 hours per week.

Students needing additional financial support may apply for federal Stafford Loans.

The University of New Haven

The University of New Haven was founded in 1920 on 84 acres in West Haven, Connecticut. There are approximately 6,000 students attending currently. The university is minutes from New Haven and public transportation make New York and Boston easy destinations. In addition to the cultural and entertainment opportunities available on campus, students also have access to the resources of nearby Yale University.
