Graduate Studies in Education at University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), in western Pennsylvania, was founded in 1787 and is one of the oldest public institutions of higher education in the nation. U.S. News and World Report ranks the University of Pittsburgh School of Education graduate program among its top 30 graduate education programs in the nation.

For more than 100 years, the University of Pittsburgh School of Education has been dedicated to preparing students for life-changing careers, whether they desire to be teachers, researchers, public policy experts, administrators or health educators. Ranked 27th by U.S. News and World Report among graduate schools of education, the School of Education (SOE) consists of five academic departments: Administrative and Policy Studies; Health and Physical Activity; Instruction and Learning; Learning Sciences and Policy; and Psychology in Education. Through these departments, the school awards over 50 graduate degrees and offers 12 certificate programs.

Department of Administrative and Policy Studies

The School of Education's Administrative and Policy Studies (ADMPS) department helps to develop school leaders and policymakers who can effectively advocate advancements while managing K12 and higher education systems.

Master's and doctoral degrees are offered in higher education management, school leadership, and social and comparative analysis in education. Administrative and supervisory certificates are also offered in school leadership.

Department of Health and Physical Activity

The Health and Physical Activity (HPA) department promotes the importance of physically active lifestyles and other health-related behaviors that lead to better quality of life.

Master's degrees are offered in the areas of health and fitness, and health, physical activity, and chronic disease. HPA also offers a PhD program in exercise physiology, and an EdD in health and physical activity.

Department of Instruction and Learning

The Department of Instruction and Learning (DIL) program prepares expert and leader teachers in specific subject areas by shaping an understanding of educating and learning from various perspectives.

The department awards a variety of master's degrees, initial and add-on teaching certificate options, supervisory certificates, as well as PhD and EdD options; areas of focus include but are not limited to: early childhood and elementary education; secondary education: English and Communications, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL); Language, Literacy, and Culture; Special Education; Reading Education; Early Intervention; Applied Behavioral Analysis; Vision Studies.

Department of Psychology in Education

The Psychology in Education (PIE) department prepares graduates for professional careers in and out of the classroom (applied developmental psychology) and in the lab (research methodology). Master's and doctoral degrees, as well as teaching certificates, are awarded in applied developmental psychology. The school also offers master's and doctoral degrees in research methodology.

Learning Sciences and Policy Doctoral Degrees

The PhD in Learning Sciences and Policy (LSAP) program at the School of Education incorporates the inclusion of learning sciences into education and teaching, and emphasizes organizational and policy change with the goal of improving instruction.

The EdD program in Out-of-School Learning is intended for experienced informal learning professionals seeking advanced training for leadership positions in museums, after-school learning, media, digital design, university outreach/extension, and other areas where learning environments exist outside of schools.

Faculty, Research, and Outreach

The School of Education at University of Pittsburgh has 53 full-time faculty members on staff with a 4:1 ratio of doctoral students to full-time faculty members. Faculty members and graduate students are involved in a variety of collaborative research experiences ranging from more basic research to research that is applied to school settings.

The SOE also has many partnerships with centers, institutes, and initiatives both on campus and regionally, and has developed some of its own centers, such as the Center for Urban Education (CUE) and the Center for Motivation, to enhance the education of its students and students in the local communities. These include outreach programs such as the Western PA Writing Project and the Educational Leadership Initiative.

The tuition-based Falk Laboratory School, affiliated with the SOE, is a K-8 laboratory school that provides faculty members, student interns, practicum students, and researchers with opportunities to develop and support new and innovative practices in education.

Scholarships, Assistantships, Fellowships

The School of Education offers some departmental aid options to students pursuing advanced degrees. Financial assistance is available to a limited number of graduate students through graduate student assistantships, teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships, graduate student researchers, and tuition remission.

In addition to departmental aid, the SOE has numerous scholarships and fellowships available that were established through gifts or grants.

Campus and Surroundings

The main campus of the University of Pittsburgh is situated on 132 urban acres in Pittsburgh's historic Oakland section. Much of the campus, including its centerpiece 42-story Cathedral of Learning, falls within the Oakland Civic Center and Schenley Farms National Historic District, a park populated with buildings that replicate the city's architectural history.

The main campus borders or is within a short walking distance of many recreational, cultural, and educational institutions that also populate the Oakland neighborhood. The campus is directly adjacent to Schenley Plaza, the main branch of the Carnegie Public Library, the Carnegie Museums of Natural History and Art, and the Carnegie Music Hall.

The campus is widely recognized for its commitment to environmental sustainability and has won multiple Green Star Awards from the Professional Grounds Management Society.
