Overview

Big Data Requires Big Skills

Analytics professionals who can unlock the power of big data and apply it in previously unimaginable ways are in short supply and have an opportunity to make a difference across industries. The MS in Analytics at the University of San Francisco trains students to process and analyze big data to identify patterns and trends, and to apply the analytics to business strategy, health care delivery, resource management, and a range of other fields and industries.

The 34-unit program at the University of San Francisco delivers a rigorous curriculum in the mathematical and computational techniques of big data, the analytics tied to strategic decisions, and the skills to communicate these results in business settings. In these ways, a computer scientist does not have the finance and business skills to create and present effective narratives, and statisticians do not have the computational background needed to prepare data.

Designed for Your Success

The MS in Analytics program resides at USF's beachfront campus in San Francisco's Presidio National Park. The program is offered jointly by the School of Management and the College of Arts and Sciences, because Analytics necessarily pulls from different disciplines. The graduate program engages faculty from business, computer science, economics and finance.

The one-year, full-time program launches every August with the Analytics Boot Camp, continues with graduate courses and three Practicums, a key internship feature that grounds students in the professional and interpersonal skills needed to succeed in a variety of business settings. One-on-one mentoring and frequent presentations by program partners about real analytical problems, and how to address them, are key features of the Practicums. Students also complete an Intensive Project in teams, analyzing and applying real-world data sets and developing a major presentation to meet the client's goals.

More information is available about the College of Arts and Sciences and applying online, as well as information for international graduate students.

USF Is Your University -- San Francisco Is Your Campus

USF was founded in 1855 as the first university in San Francisco and is ranked in the top tier of national universities (U.S. News and World Report's America's Best Colleges, 2011). USF is a private, Jesuit university with a distinguished history in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, finance, and business management. Of the 10,000 students at USF, 39% are graduate students. USF is composed of five graduate schools -- Arts and Sciences, Management, Education, Law, and Nursing.

The university offers rigorous and innovative graduate programs with truly extraordinary faculty members -- professors who are experts in their fields and passionate about research. USF's faculty are dedicated to providing high-quality, personalized attention to their students through small class sizes.

Students enjoy the rich experiences available in San Francisco, one of the world's most vibrant, cosmopolitan and beautiful cities. As the financial, cultural and technological center of the West Coast of the U.S., the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most economically advanced regions of the world. San Francisco's diverse population draws people from around the world, while the Pacific Ocean climate of the city is moderate all year round. Outside the city, USF students experience California's many other attractions, such as the Napa Valley wine country, the Redwood forests, Pacific beaches, the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe, and the Big Sur Coast.
