Overview

Discover the University of Utah -- A Special Place for Graduate Studies

The University of Utah is where gene mapping was discovered (RFLP analysis), where gene knockouts were first performed, and where many genes causing cancers of the colon and brain were first cloned. Utah is a national leader in developmental genetics, structural biology, cancer biology, and several other areas. Program faculty are drawn from the Departments of Biochemistry, Biology, Human Genetics, Neurobiology and Anatomy, Oncological Sciences, and Pathology, and are organized into research interest groups in the general areas of Biochemistry/Structural Biology, Cancer/Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Gene Expression, Genetics, Microbiology/Immunology, and Neurobiology.

There are many advantages for graduate students entering the Interdepartmental Program in Molecular Biology. The broad and rigorous first-year curriculum offers strong training in all aspects of modern molecular biology. All students are fully funded and there is no teaching requirement in the first year of the Program. All students also have the opportunity to complete four laboratory rotations in the first year with Program faculty, allowing students to make a well-informed decision about their selection of a thesis advisor and Ph.D. research project. The application is also FREE!

Living in Utah and Salt Lake City

At the University of Utah, students discover how great it is to live in Utah and Salt Lake City. Utah offers incredible natural beauty, with the University of Utah located at the base of the Wasatch Mountain Range, a world-renowned skiing, hiking, and mountain biking destination. Students can visit the University of Utah's Web site or the Web site for the Utah Office of Tourism and see how the combination of science and lifestyle in the area are unmatched anywhere else in the nation.

Financial Aid

The 2013-2014 fellowship amount is $26,000 per year plus a $1,000 starting allocation. Despite the relatively low cost of living in Utah, the fellowship usually undergoes an increase during students' graduate career. Additionally, tuition waivers and health and dental insurance are provided to all Program students.

The Molecular Biology Graduate Program, at the University of Utah, is integrated within the Biosciences Graduate Programs that include the Biological Chemistry, Neuroscience, and MD/PhD Programs.
