Overview

The MSAP at the University of Wisconsin-Stout

The University of Wisconsin-Stout offers a Master of Science in Applied Psychology (MSAP) through which students gain hands-on experience with using psychological principles, theories, and research methods to solve real-word problems in many fields and industries, including healthcare, business, education, and law.

Master of Science in Applied Psychology Program

The Master of Science in Applied Psychology program, which can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis, includes 30 credits in core courses. It also consists of 12 credits in one of three concentrations: industrial/organizational psychology, health promotions and disease prevention, or evaluation research.

The first three semesters of the two-year (full-time) program requires participation in multiple projects that build valuable experience in client relations and research, data, and evaluation methodology. The last semester incorporates a field problem or master's thesis and internship in applied psychology. Beyond the required courses, students can take any graduate courses -- with approval -- that meet their interests or academic and career goals.

Approximately 85% of the MSAP courses involve hands-on learning with many opportunities for both individual work and group collaboration.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology Concentration

The concentration in industrial/organization psychology examines people's behavior in group settings in the workplace. It focuses on employee motivation, personnel research, recruitment and selection, and job design methodology.

Students in this concentration acquire job analysis, performance assessment, and workplace motivation skills. This enables them to build successful careers in human resources, training and development, or business consulting.

Health Promotions and Disease Prevention Concentration

MSAP students in the health promotions and disease prevention concentration gain expertise in applying psychological principles to understanding and solving real-world health problems. Upon graduation, they work in a variety of health-related settings such as clinics, schools, non-profit organizations, and insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

They work on various health-related matters including health behavior interventions, health promotion, wellness education, healthcare policy, and health services research.

Evaluation Research Concentration

The MSAP evaluation research concentration focuses on the analytical methods and data-driven decision-making processes that are used to help businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies provide resources to people.

Students assess policy and program effectiveness, determine organizational and client needs, and measure the integrity of program implementation. Students in this concentration gain skills in program planning and development, needs assessment, and evaluation of program effectiveness and implementation.
