Overview

Wayne State University (in Detroit, Michigan) Offers Multiple Graduate Business Programs at a Large Urban Research University

Since Wayne State University's (WSU) internationally accredited School of Business Administration began offering MBA programs over 50 years ago, the programs have adapted to accommodate the needs of traditional students and working professionals. While most of Wayne State's MBA students elect to study part-time around professional work schedules, students may choose to take full time course loads if they desire.

Students are required to take 6 core courses and 6 electives which can be used either as part of a general curriculum or applied towards the completion of one or more of the 12 offered concentrations. Required core MBA courses include: "Managerial Accounting," "Corporate Financial Management," "Managing Organizational Behavior," "Marketing Strategy," "Social Perspectives on the Business Enterprise," and "Strategic Management."

In keeping with their individual career goals and interests, MBA students can choose concentrations in accounting systems, auditing, corporate governance, finance, financial accounting, global supply chain, information systems management, internal audit, international business, management, marketing and taxation.

Flexible scheduling options include evening and online courses.

Many of the more than 31,000 business professionals who have graduated from the School of Business Administration's graduate programs play key roles at multinational corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations, while others are successful entrepreneurs.

In addition to the MBA program, the business school graduate program roster includes: Graduate Certificate in Business, Master of Science in Accounting (MSA), Master of Science in Taxation (MST), Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration (PhD), and Joint MBA/Juris Doctor degree.

Learn Leadership Skills from Top Notch Leaders

WSU's School of Business Administration in Detroit, Michigan, is committed to ensuring that the MBA program is relevant to the demands of the ever-changing workplace. It does so by maintaining a dialog with leaders of some of the world's foremost organizations.

Gracious executives open their doors to student field trips and research, participate in panel discussions, and provide in-class lectures.

Graduate Faculty Composed of Leading Business Scholars and Researchers

Wayne State is one of only 3 universities in Michigan ranked in the top research category of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Many of the business school's full-time faculty members are leaders in their fields, with teaching and research expertise in taxation, advertising, auditing, consumer behavior, information technology, globalization, production, financial institutions, strategy, organizational behavior, and a number of other areas.

Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) Emphasizes a Career, Not Just an Entry-Level Position

WSU's highly selective Master of Science in Accounting program gives graduate students the opportunity to meet the 150-hour education requirement for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant in Michigan, as well as effectively preparing those students for the exam. Students with undergraduate degrees in accounting, who are pursuing careers in private industry, financial institutions, government, and non-profit organizations, will benefit immensely from the MSA program, too.

Wayne State's MSA program requires a total of 30 credit hours, but does not require a thesis. Students take 18 credits of core courses such as "Cost Accounting Control and Analysis" and "Accounting Systems: Design and Control." Next are 9 credits of electives that provide advanced coverage of the body of knowledge associated with studies in accounting. In addition, students each take a final capstone course.

Master of Science in Taxation (MST)

As tax laws become more complex, as business becomes more competitive and as the need for financial and estate planning becomes more evident, the need for highly trained tax experts becomes even more obvious.

The Master of Science in Taxation (MST) program prepares students for entry into professional tax practice in both the public and private sectors. Through the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the MST student learns the accounting, legal, and public policy aspects of taxation. As students progress through the rigorous program toward the capstone course, they gain solid foundations in the discipline.

The Department of Accounting's full-time faculty members have expertise in auditing, international accounting, business law and ethics, taxation, and other areas. In addition, part-time instructors share their experiences as business professionals.

The MST program requires a total of 30 credit hours, but does not require a thesis. Examples of core courses are "Advanced Tax Problems" and "Business and Professional Ethics for Managers and Accountants." In addition, elective courses provide advanced coverage of the body of knowledge associated with studies in taxation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration (PhD)

The PhD in Business Administration program prepares students to become faculty members at major research universities. The program is research based and focuses on quantitative skills and global perspectives -- enabling students to engage in research projects with faculty members early in the doctoral program. The 90-credit program consists of 60 credits of coursework and 30 credits of dissertation research. Specializations are available in finance, marketing, and management.
