Western New England University - PhD Program in Engineering Management - Overview

The Curriculum and Requirements of the PhD in Engineering Management Program

The PhD in Engineering Management can be completed either full- or part-time. Students will learn the technical depth and gain the breadth of knowledge to become successful practitioners, researchers, or educators in the management of engineering and technology. The program focuses on developing skills needed to conduct rigorous research in areas related to the improvement, design, and management of projects and programs within complex human technological systems including engineering, healthcare, service, and logistical/transportation systems.

Candidates with master's degrees will complete 33 credits at the 600 and 700 level and 24-credit dissertations for 57 total credits. Candidates with bachelor's degrees will complete 63 credits at the 600 and 700 levels and 24-credits dissertations for 87 total credits. Assistantships and fellowships are available providing full or partial funding.

The Engineering Faculty of Western New England University

The PhD faculty in the Engineering Management program is excellent and diverse. Together, they constitute a wealth of industry and academic knowledge, which will provide rich experiences for all students in the program. The faculty members and their research interests include:

- S. Hossein Cheraghi, who is the Dean of the College of Engineering, a Professor of Industrial Engineering, and who holds a PhD from the Pennsylvania State University. His research interests include the modeling and analysis of discrete systems; production systems; tolerance analysis and synthesis; and non-conformance management.

- Julie Drzymalski, an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering, who holds a PhD from Lehigh University. Her research interests include discrete event systems, operations research, project management, and supply chains.

- Eric W. Haffner, a Professor of Industrial Engineering, who holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts. His research interests include engineering and design, facility layout and design, production and manufacturing systems design, simulation related to manufacturing systems, and computer aided design.

- Abdul H. Kamal, an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering, who holds a PhD from the University of Nebraska. His research interests include statistical analysis, ergonomics, and quality engineering.

- Thomas K. Keyser, a Professor in and Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, who holds a PhD from Clemson University. His research interests include automated manufacturing cells, distributed computing in manufacturing, discrete event system simulation, and human computer modeling.

- Brian K. Smith, an Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering, holder of a PhD from the University of Arkansas. His research interests include healthcare supply chain performance management and improvement; design and management of organizational improvement projects; process improvement tools and methodologies; performance measurement; and organizational assessment.
