William Paterson University of New Jersey - Overview

Located on 370 wooded acres in suburban Wayne, New Jersey, William Paterson University provides a challenging, supportive, intellectual environment for more than 11,500 students enrolled in 5 academic colleges.

Founded in 1855 and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, William Paterson today offers more than 250 undergraduate and graduate academic programs, including a number of programs leading to endorsement for teacher certification and other professional licensing qualifications. Its advanced facilities provide students with a wide range of learning opportunities in its classrooms, laboratories, and studios, and throughout the campus, as well as at various off-campus locations.

William Paterson's faculty members provide a valuable blend of accomplished scholarship and practical, applied experience. Its distinguished faculty includes 37 Fulbright scholars and recipients of numerous other awards, grants, and fellowships.

Students benefit from individualized attention from faculty mentors, small class sizes, and numerous research, internship, and clinical experiences. Financial aid -- including a limited number of graduate assistantships -- is available to qualified students.

William Paterson Offers a Wide Range of Graduate Programs in Five Colleges

William Paterson University offers a wide range of degree programs, with additional certification and endorsement programs, in the University's 5 colleges: the College of the Arts and Communication, the Cotsakos College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the College of Science and Health.

Nine degrees are awarded: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Science (MS), Master of Education (MEd), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), Master of Music (MM), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Degree requirements vary.

The MA is offered in clinical and counseling psychology, English (with concentrations in literature and writing), history, professional communication, public policy and international affairs, and applied sociology.

The MFA in art offers concentrations in fine arts, media arts, and design arts, with studio courses in ceramics, computer art and animation, textiles, furniture design, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. In addition, the MFA is offered in creative and professional writing.

The MS is offered in biology, biotechnology, communication disorders (speech-language pathology), and exercise and sport studies.

The MEd degree in professional counseling prepares graduates to enter the counseling profession through rigorous training in 2 key areas: school counseling and mental health counseling. The MEd degree in curriculum and learning includes concentrations in bilingual/ English as a second language, early childhood, learning technologies, middle and high school mathematics, school library media, and teaching children mathematics.

The MEd in educational leadership prepares degree candidates both to lead and manage schools. The MAT is offered in teaching. The MEd in literacy includes concentrations in reading and language arts. The MEd in special education includes concentrations in advanced studies, learning disabilities, and being a teacher of students with disabilities.

The College of Education also offers teacher certification programs for college graduates who wish to obtain initial teaching certification in New Jersey, as well as endorsement programs for certified teachers who wish to obtain additional teaching certification.

The MM is offered in music, with concentrations in jazz studies, music education, and music management.

The MBA is offered with concentrations in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, general business, marketing, and music management.

The MSN is offered in community-based nursing, with tracks in administration, advanced practice education, and nurse faculty scholar track.

Graduate nursing offers 2 school nurse certification programs -- non-instructional track and instructional track, which includes a teacher of health endorsement. The DNP is in nursing practice.

The University also offers 2 professional certificate programs in assessment and evaluation in research and skills certificate for sociology, and adult nurse practitioner certificate (post master's).

The Office of Financial Aid Can Help With Graduate Tuition

Tuition (including fees) for graduate students who are New Jersey residents is $609 per credit and $945 per credit for nonresidents. William Paterson University offers graduate assistantships, an academic award that carries a $6,000 stipend and a waiver of tuition and fees, for the extent of the appointment. Graduate assistants are students who are matriculated and enrolled full time in a graduate program, and work on campus a total of twenty hours per week.

The Office of Financial Aid at William Paterson University can help in several ways. First, it can provide information about available grants and loans offered by the university, as well as from the state or federal government. These range from the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program for students in TEACH-approved majors, to the Federal Direct Stafford, and Graduate PLUS Loans for those registered for 5 or more credits.

On campus, William Paterson has an ever-broadening variety of cultural and educational events to enjoy. The excitement of live theatre, contemporary art, concert music, and family-friendly entertainment is available on our campus.

The University's Ben Shahn Galleries offers a broad variety of contemporary artworks. The acclaimed Jazz Room Series, now in its 34th year, is one of the nation's largest and most prestigious university-sponsored jazz series, encompassing the complete spectrum of the genre. The University's Distinguished Lecturer Series, now in its 32nd year, brings notable personalities from the worlds of politics, arts, literature, sports, and business to campus.
