LocationSituated directly on the shore of Sippican Harbor, Buzzards Bay, in Marion, Massachusetts, the Tabor Academy Summer Program makes full use of the residential, academic, and athletic facilities of Tabor Academy, an independent, coeducational boarding school founded in 1876.
Background and PhilosophyEstablished in 1917, the Tabor Academy Summer Program gives young people the opportunity to develop to their full potential as athletes, students, and individuals. Under the guidance of highly qualified counselors, coaches, and teachers, the program encourages young people to take pride in their personal achievements in the classroom, on the playing fields, and on the waterfront. Tabor provides the option of doing summer schoolwork without losing any of the joys of a summer program.
Program OfferingsEach of the activities offered in the program is carefully supervised, with special attention given to the individual. Instruction is a major part of each activity, and emphasis is placed on personal achievement rather than competitive “success.” Each child creates his or her own recreational program by choosing among these activities: art, baseball, basketball, ceramics, crafts, drama, field hockey, junior sports, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, squash, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Campers should visit Tabor’s Web site for the latest activities. Because of Tabor’s oceanfront location and extensive waterfront facilities, sailing is among the most popular activities. Tabor’s fleet includes Capris, Optimists, and 420s. Sailing lessons are provided by certified instructors, who offer basic lessons for beginners and more challenging opportunities for experienced sailors. Children may also take advantage of academic offerings. Although academic courses are not required, most participants in the program choose to take one or two of the following classes: computers, creative writing, English, English as a foreign language, exploratory science, marine science, mathematics (including algebra and geometry), photography, Spanish, SSAT prep, and theater arts. Whether the course is taken for purposes of review or enrichment, classes are kept small so that teachers may work closely with individual students. Classes meet five times a week and do not require homework, as both instruction and practice exercises are completed during the 60-minute class periods. Campers should visit the Web site for the most up-to-date course listings. Tabor’s Marine and Nautical Science Center is a state-of-the-art facility for the study of marine biology; marine science is the most popular course selection in the summer program. Field trips to local beaches and wetlands, as well as to the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, complement the hands-on experience in Tabor’s waterfront lab.
EnrollmentChildren attend from around the nation and the world. In a typical summer, 30 international students, representing twelve to seventeen different countries, join the 100 American participants in the program.

FacilitiesTabor Academy provides first-class facilities for academics, the fine and performing arts, and outdoor sports (with nine playing fields, seven all-weather tennis courts, and access to a golf course). The athletic center offers an indoor skating rink, a gymnasium, a multipurpose field house, a fitness center, and nine squash courts. Campers live in the well-equipped dormitories of the Academy, and they enjoy the full services of the school’s health center and dining hall.
StaffThe program’s staff includes more than 80 teachers, coaches, and counselors from colleges throughout the country and several faculty members from Tabor Academy or similar schools. In a typical summer, several staff members are Tabor Academy graduates or former participants in the Summer Program.
Medical CareBasic medical care is provided by Tabor Academy’s Baxter Health Center, which is supplemented by local community health and hospital services. This includes 24-hour/seven-day-a-week nurses who live on campus. In addition, pediatricians visit the health center and are on call when needed. Every participant is required to have medical insurance, and parents are asked to submit a detailed medical form before registration day.
CostsResidential fees for a three-week session are $3900 (including two academic courses), and tuition for the six-week session (including two academic courses) is $6300. Laundry service is also included in the tuition. The program recommends establishing a $200 “bank account” for a child’s spending money; children may make withdrawals from this account only with the Director’s permission, and the balance is returned to the parents at the end of the session. Day fees are approximately $285 per week; campers should visit Tabor’s Web site for the latest fees.
TransportationOn opening and closing days, the program provides transportation between Logan International Airport, Boston, and Tabor Academy, Marion.
Application TimetableApplications are welcome throughout the year. The residential application deadline is May 1 for the $1200 deposit and June 1 for the full amount. The day application deadline is June 1, and the full amount must be paid. Tours of Tabor’s campus and meetings with summer program administrators occur during scheduled information sessions or may be scheduled in advance with the Summer Program Office.
