LocationEastern U.S. Music Camp, Inc., established in 1976, is conducted at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. The University is ideally situated on a 1,100-acre hillside campus. This magnificent campus shares a valley with the quaint village of Hamilton. The peaceful countryside surrounding Hamilton has gently rolling hills in a tranquil rural setting. Hamilton is a village of 2,500 people. Shops, homes, and the Colgate Inn front a green in the center of this friendly town. The campus adjoins the village, and the shops and services are within easy walking distance.
Background and PhilosophyFor thirty-three years, Thomas and Grace Brown have designed and directed a program to provide students with opportunities and enrichment in all areas of music. Each summer, students who attend are happy to be an integral part of the music program and exciting campus life. They are offered a professional, well-balanced music program of high standards and an opportunity to pursue musical studies through class, individual, and group instruction; to perform a wide range of instrumental and choral works in ensemble and concert; and to participate in supervised sports (optional) and other informal recreational activities. The program is designed to complement the growth and development of young people. Such musical training teaches concentration, offers social opportunities, and helps develop sensitivity to, and pride in, the beautiful things in life. Careers in music are not necessarily the goals of students attending the Camp; the experience is one that is remembered and valued throughout life in any career. The total musical and social experience has made the Camp one of the most highly regarded music programs in the country. Enrollment is limited to ensure ample opportunity for both individual and group instruction. Highly individualized instruction in a friendly atmosphere is stressed by the professional, nationally known staff, including college faculty members.
Program OfferingsPerforming Groups Each student may participate in several groups and on more than one instrument and/or voice. Students are encouraged to stay for the full four weeks or may enroll for the two- or three-week sessions. Each week, a new concert program is prepared. Musical and social benefits are greater with longer sessions. Tape auditions are not required. Students may earn high school credit when enrolled for the full four weeks.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesStudents enjoy numerous recreational and sports facilities, such as an indoor/outdoor Olympic-size pool, a gym, a golf course, tennis courts, a track, and a fully equipped fitness center. They often enjoy walks into the quaint village of Hamilton to see movies and visit an old-fashioned ice-cream shop. There are also picnics on the Student Union patio; a trip to nearby Cooperstown, New York; games; softball; volleyball; golf; basketball; and a pizza party Saturday evenings after the concert. There are informal workshops, lectures, and opportunities to question faculty members and instructors. Colgate-sponsored performances are also held. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet talented and interesting people from around the country and other countries. The friendly faculty and staff members coach the students daily and are always available to share their talents with the students. This is an ideal place to grow.
FacilitiesThe campus is accented by a spring-fed lake with swans, wild and domestic ducks, and tree-lined walks and drives. Several buildings date to the nineteenth century. The quad on the hill includes modern residence halls, Memorial Chapel, O’Connor Campus Center, and a blend of old and new academic buildings. Also on the hill and overlooking scenic mountains are the Observatory, Cultural Center, and dining hall. Down from the hill are Case Library, Dana Arts Center, Sanford Field House, and well-manicured athletic fields. Rehearsals, classes, concerts, private lessons, and recitals are held in the air-conditioned Dana Arts Center. Resident students live in modern boys’ and girls’ dorms, 2 per room by age, that include laundry facilities, lounges, and TVs. Three well-balanced meals, including a full and varied salad bar and vegetarian options, are served daily by the Marriott Corporation in a modern stone facility with an intimate atmosphere. Wooden tables next to the windows overlook the beautiful valley and hills below.
StaffFaculty and staff members are carefully selected professional certified educators, solo artists, composers, and conductors, including members of the Colgate Music Department, area college music faculties, and symphony orchestras. Nationally renowned guest artists and clinicians are on campus for master classes and concerts.
