Students and campers stay in dormitories (2–3 per room) and eat at the on-campus dining facility.
Background and PhilosophyThe Camp Pacific program was founded in 1943 as an all-boys’ surfing camp. Since then, the program has grown to offer a wide variety of sessions for both boys and girls. The camp’s philosophy is to provide a safe and fun environment in which young people can learn and grow.
Program OfferingsAcademic Program The Academy by the Sea’s summer session offers a coeducational program that balances academics and recreation for a fulfilling educational experience. The Academy offers a variety of class subjects, and students are expected to pick the four classes to comprise their summer schedules. Students have the option of being boarding or day students. Boarding is encouraged, as the dormitory experience is an important part of a student’s overall learning and enjoyment. Boarding students also have the benefit of participating in a mandatory evening study hall and afternoon activities. The summer academic session classes are small (generally 6–10 students), and individual participation is required. Subjects offered include math, English, science, oceanography, creative writing, computers, history, Spanish, English as a second language, and various electives. Designated courses may be taken for a semester of high school credit. Afternoon activities, special events, and weekend excursions allow each student the opportunity to take a break from scholastic responsibilities and experience lasting friendships and fun. Camp Pacific Founded in 1943, Camp Pacific is a recreation and sports-based camp that continues to provide a safe and fun summer experience for kids ages 8–16. During the two-week and three-week Camp Pacific sessions, the focus is on teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun. Campers can choose to participate in a wide variety of exciting activities. At Camp Pacific, campers learn new skills, gain self-confidence, and are encouraged to work with their peers. In the morning, campers are divided into weekly interest groups and are led by a counselor through an activity. In the afternoon, campers participate in daily free-choice recreational activities or sports. Trips to area attractions are offered on a weekly basis. Typical activities include arts and crafts, basketball, bodyboarding, camp radio broadcasting, capture the flag, clay sculpting, cricket, drama, flag football, Frisbee golf, jewelry making, mask making, painting, riflery, rugby, sand castle contests, scavenger hunts, snorkeling, soccer, surfing, swimming, tennis, tie-dye, Ultimate Frisbee, water polo, and much more. Camp Pacific’s Surf and Bodyboard Camp At Camp Pacific’s Surf and Bodyboard Camp, the goal is to provide each camper with an unforgettable experience. The Surf and Bodyboard Camp is designed for all skill levels, from beginner to intermediate. The session is one week in duration and is full of activities. Group beach instruction, classroom instruction, independent practice, and field trips all combine for a very exciting week of learning. Campers are taught skills in equipment options, wave selection, and basic surf techniques. All activities are supervised by counselors, certified lifeguards, and experienced surfing and bodyboarding instructors. In the afternoons, campers can continue their practice at the beach or participate in the variety of activities enjoyed by participants in the three-week Camp Pacific, listed above. Surfers and bodyboarders from the ages of 8 to 16 are eligible.
EnrollmentThe academic program enrolls between 150 and 180 students. Camp Pacific enrolls between 50 and 80 campers. The Surf and Bodyboard Camp enrolls between 50 and 80 campers.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesEach program offers a wide variety of fun and educational activities. On weekends, the five-week and three-week groups participate in outings to popular southern California destinations such as theme parks, sporting events, museums, and beaches.
FacilitiesBoarding students and campers live in dormitories that house 2–3 people per room. Dormitories are important centers of activity where friendships with peers and counselors are formed. Each dormitory is supervised by resident faculty members and counselors who serve as advisers to students and campers, ensuring that an adult is always available for assistance and guidance. Boys and girls are housed in separate dormitories. Rooms are furnished with beds, desks, and bureaus. Each student or camper is responsible for the condition of his or her room. Although the basic organization of the dormitories is informal, constant faculty presence is essential to develop an atmosphere of learning and safety. Students and campers receive three meals each day, served at the dining hall. Security personnel are on campus 24 hours a day. Campus facilities include tennis courts, private beach access, a swimming pool, athletic fields, an on-campus dining facility, an oceanfront recreation hall, a chapel, a library, a radio station, health center, and an indoor gymnasium and weight room.
StaffFor the academic session, experienced teachers and administrators provide classroom instruction and overall supervision of academics, dormitories, and campus life. For Camp Pacific sessions, college and university students, selected for their demonstrated responsibility and experience, live in the dormitories and serve as counselors and resident assistants. All staff members successfully complete a thorough background check and drug test.
Medical CareMedical personnel are on campus, and a physician is on call 24 hours a day. Due to the high cost of hospitalization, it is required that all students enroll in a medical insurance program prior to arriving at The Academy by the Sea/Camp Pacific. All international campers must have a temporary U.S. medical insurance policy, for which an additional fee is charged.

Costs for the 2007 season are as follows: Academic Session, $4725; Camp Pacific recreational camp, $1690 for a two-week session or $2445 for a three-week session; and Surf and Bodyboard Camp, $880. An incidental account of between $200 and $450 is required for academic and recreational sessions.
