LocationIntern Exchange International (IEI) participants live in London, a dynamic, safe, world-class city without language barriers. Students reside in the University of London residence halls in the heart of Bloomsbury, the historic literary district where Virginia Woolf and Charles Dickens once lived. The British Museum, Soho, Oxford Street, and the West End theatres are just minutes away.
Background and PhilosophyNina Glickman and Lynn Weinstein established Intern Exchange International in 1987 as a way to encourage high school students to make an informed career choice. IEI’s exciting summer internships in London offer students a hands-on experience in a profession that interests them. In addition to career exposure and the opportunity to obtain prestigious references for college, this monthlong peek into the day-to-day rhythms of the working world provides a wonderful growth experience. Day trips, weekend excursions, and special touring events are an integral part of the summer. IEI is a bridge between high school and college, where students experience tremendous social, academic, and personal growth; their newfound sense of independence will serve them well in college. Because of the unique nature of this program, the interns experience freedom as young, responsible adults within established boundaries. IEI students are self-directed, responsible individuals who enjoy learning in a real-world environment and who are excited by this outstanding opportunity to learn and live in London for the summer.
Program OfferingsIn this program, students gain exposure to a promising career at the side of a practicing professional. Interning is combined with interesting and fun evening and weekend activities and excursions. Internships give students 16–18 years old a chance to participate firsthand in a field of interest by doing meaningful work with a preceptor. They might help prepare cases for trial with prominent barristers and solicitors, conduct research in the clinics of well-known physicians, or unearth underground ruins with archaeologists. Internship programs include Archaeology, Art Gallery and Auction House, Business/Finance, Community Service/Social Services, Culinary Arts, Genealogy, Hotel Management, Information Technology, Law, Medicine (Medical Research, Veterinary Medicine), Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising, Publishing, Retail Sales, and Strategic Studies. New internships are always being developed. Media & Design Workshops take students 15–18 years old into the real world, where they get the background and skills they need to pursue their chosen path. Accomplished professionals serve as mentors and tutors in a variety of project-based workshops. Video Production/Acting for the Camera students work with professionals to create their own documentaries, and Journalism interns team up with journalists to publish their own newspaper. Media & Design Workshops include Fashion and Design; Journalism; Digital, Documentary, and Special Processes Photography; Digital Media; and Video Production/Acting for the Camera. All Media & Design participants are eligible to receive 3 college credits upon successful completion of their entire programme. These credits are issued by Cavendish College and are transferable for high school or college credit and to bolster college applications. Interns maintain a weekly journal in which they reflect on a subject of their own choice or pick from a wide range of suggested topics. The journal can be used as a valuable resource for writing high school essays and preparing for college entrance essays.
EnrollmentThe program accepts high school students, including graduating seniors, ages 15 to 18. Between 150 and 220 students are enrolled each session.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesAfter a full week of internships, theatre, concerts, and special dinners out on the town, weekends are split between “pick and choose” days in London and daylong excursions into the country. Interns enjoy exploring the historic sites of Stonehenge, Bath, the Cotswolds, Brighton, Greenwich, and Cambridge. London itself has much to offer, including afternoon tea with scones and cream at Harrods, Madame Tussaud’s, Piccadilly, and the street musicians in Leicester Square. Past interns have seen Usher, Justin Timberlake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wu Tang, and Oasis in concert. Opportunities abound for the free evenings. An Intern Exchange exclusive offers interns a special college planning programme entitled The IEI Advantage. The series of three workshops helps interns use their IEI summer experience to maximum advantage in the college application and interview process and beyond.
FacilitiesInterns live in one comfortable, secure University of London residence hall—Commonwealth Hall. This dormitory, with single rooms, shared baths, common rooms, and TV lounges, faces an elegant Georgian crescent with lovely gardens. Tennis and squash courts and a pool are available for the interns’ use. Reception desks are manned 24 hours a day; public telephones and laundry facilities are available. A full English breakfast and a three-course evening meal (with vegetarian options) are provided in the spacious, self-service dining room. The surrounding Russell Square neighborhood, friendly and cozy, offers all the conveniences of home—cleaners, restaurants, a supermarket, a chemist, a movie theatre, and a health-food store. Three tube stations are within easy walking distance.
StaffProgram Directors Lynn Ann Weinstein and Nina M. Glickman, M.Ed., established Intern Exchange International in 1987 as a way to encourage high school students to make an informed career choice. The sisters and business partners have personally supervised the company’s growth and development ever since. The summer staff is knowledgeable and mature. The Dorm Leader, who has experience working with teens, serves as a liaison between the students, Resident Assistants (RAs), and Directors. The Resident Assistants are experienced public and private school teachers. They assume responsibility for a group of students and provide support, encouragement, and guidance.
Medical CareIEI is affiliated with experienced physicians who are available to see the interns and on call 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency.
CostsProgram tuition in 2008 is $7235 plus group airfare. Included in the tuition are housing, breakfast and dinner daily, linens and towels, and housekeeping services. Also included are special dinner events, group activities (scheduled theatre, weekend trips, and excursions), a Tube Pass, and luggage tags. To facilitate well-organized departures and arrivals, all travel is arranged by IEI’s Travel Coordinator. Students need a valid passport to enter the United Kingdom; visas are not required for holders of U.S. passports.
Application TimetableAdmission to the internship program is on a rolling basis and is extremely limited in certain programs. There is no final date for registration; the final date depends on the availability of internships and housing. Students who apply after April 1 should telephone the IEI office to confirm availability of places in the program. Completed applications are reviewed promptly. After acceptance, interns receive a BritKit (IEI’s summer guide), travel information, medical forms, and other important information.
