LocationElite has thirty-one educational centers—fifteen in Southern California; four in Northern California; six in Canada; five in Seoul, South Korea; and one in Bangkok, Thailand—and is continuing to grow. All Elite centers are in major cities or suburbs convenient to them.
Background and PhilosophyFounded in 1987, Elite has built its reputation by offering academic enrichment to motivated, goal-oriented students of all ability levels. Elite’s flagship programs prepare students for successful performance on the SAT Reasoning Test for college admissions through a variety of course offerings and schedules. Younger students benefit from the disciplined, results-oriented environment and get a head start on the fundamental language arts and math skills they need for success in middle school, junior high, and high school. Elite distinguishes itself in the field of SAT preparation by taking the test very seriously. Elite avoids the use of gimmicky shortcuts and misleading, get-smart-quick promises, focusing instead on developing those underlying skills actually measured by the SAT and other standardized tests: critical reading, math, writing proficiency, critical thinking, and sound reasoning. As a result, Elite’s students are prepared not just for higher test scores but also for continued academic success in college and beyond. Since 1997, nearly two dozen Elite students have scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, and countless others have scored in the high 1500s. Elite students’ success on the SAT has continued with the introduction of the new SAT in March 2005, which has a maximum score of 2400 points. In just the first three years of the administration of the new SAT, more than a dozen Elite students scored a perfect 2400, and a multitude of others have scored in the high 2300s, putting them in the top 1 percent of students nationwide. Elite’s younger students sign up to improve their performance in grade school, prepare for admission to private primary and secondary schools, or just to get an advance look at the subjects ahead.
Program OfferingsElementary Enrichment classes, intended for students about to enter grades 3 through 6, are kept small to foster confidence and participation. The academic emphasis is on reading, writing, and mathematics, with some initial work on critical thinking and analysis. Teachers emphasize the process of discovery, learning, and understanding so that all students finish the summer better prepared for the school year ahead, regardless of their present ability level. Students can enroll in general classes for writing, vocabulary, reading, and math. Some centers also offer classes for specific middle school admissions tests. Junior High Enrichment courses, recommended for the summer before grades 7 through 9, are intended to give students a head start on high school. The core of the Junior High Enrichment program is the Elite Book Camp. Focusing on developing students’ critical reading, grammar, and writing skills, the Elite Book Camp caters to a range of abilities, from remedial to advanced. Elite’s Math Enrichment Program provides students with a “preview” of the specific math class ahead, such as geometry, so they know what to expect. Almost all of the Junior High Enrichment students are about to enter competitive high schools where enrollment in honors and AP classes is limited and want to get a head start on admission to the best courses their high schools offer. Elite SAT Boot Camp is an extremely intensive and demanding program designed for high school students who want to commit most of their summer to raising their SAT scores. Students attend 4½ hours of classes each day, Monday through Friday, mastering the definitions of thousands of common SAT words; sharpening their critical reading skills by reading and analyzing dozens of short stories, critical essays, and magazine articles; and developing their writing skills by writing numerous essays that are scored by instructors. Classes are kept varied and interesting, with a mixture of instructors and class materials throughout each day. The Boot Camp program puts the summer to good use for students of all ability levels. The program is particularly useful for students whose critical reading skills lag behind their math skills. The Elite 2100 Goal Program is a rigorous and extensive SAT test-preparation program that requires many hours of out-of-class work and preparation. The aims of the 2100 Goal Program are college-level reading and writing and a thorough mastery of high school mathematics, resulting in truly outstanding test scores in high school and academic success thereafter. This program is designed for high school students at the top of their game who successfully take AP and honors classes at their high schools and want to round out their college applications with superior test scores. Admission to the 2100 Goal Program is very selective; students have to achieve minimum scores on Elite’s diagnostic test, have a high GPA, and demonstrate the maturity and commitment the program demands. Acceptance to the program is always at the discretion of the center directors. Students should contact the directors of the center they plan to attend to determine eligibility. The fourteen-week 2100 Goal Program requires students to stay enrolled until the national SAT testing date in October. The Elite Basic SAT Course offers students a package of five interlocking classes during the summer session: two critical reading classes, a math class, a writing class, and a practice test session. Students enrolled in the Basic SAT Course meet for a total of 11½ hours per week—each of the weekly classes meets for 2 hours, and the practice test lasts for 3½ hours. A majority of the students who live near Elite’s educational centers continue with the program after the summer. Elite’s SAT preparation courses conducted during the school year consist of a practice test session followed by three classes to help students continue developing their critical reading, math, and writing skills. Classes are offered on weekday afternoons and Saturdays to give students the convenience of designing their own course schedules. Enrollment in Elite’s SAT program during the school year is on a rolling basis, with students signing up for four-week sessions. The curriculum is intentionally designed to be useful for long-term students, with materials that are never exactly the same twice. Even the vocabulary is constantly updated and revised.
EnrollmentThe maximum number of students in each class at Elite is 15. The Summer Program at Elite attracts students from all over the United States, Canada, and Korea. Elite does not offer room or board, so students from other states and provinces typically spend the summer with relatives or family friends. Elite’s students reflect a range of academic abilities and ethnic backgrounds.
Daily Schedule
Classes in elementary enrichment, junior high enrichment, basic SAT preparation, and the 2100 Goal Program meet for 2 hours each. All students in Elite’s SAT programs are required to take a weekly practice SAT test, which lasts for 3½ hours. At every center, Elite SAT Boot Camp, which runs from Monday through Friday, starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. All other summer programs at Elite are held at a variety of times and days to make it easy for students to fit their SAT work around their other plans for the summer, and program schedules may vary from center to center. Students of all ages and abilities are expected to preserve Elite’s productive, academically focused atmosphere. Elite has zero tolerance for academic dishonesty, truancy, or possession of any tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. Elite immediately expels students who violate its rules of conduct.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesElite does not sponsor activities outside of its core classroom offerings. However, because Elite’s summer offerings are so rigorous and attract students with shared goals for success, satisfying and lasting friendships are formed each year.
