LocationCareer Explorations (CE) offers internships in New York City and Boston. New York interns live in the Meredith Willson Residence Hall at the Juilliard School in the midst of Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Boston program participants live in the Little Building on the campus of Emerson College across the street from the Boston Common in the heart of downtown Boston. Career Explorations makes full use of the diverse cultural, educational, and recreational resources that place New York City and Boston among the most exciting cities in the world.
Background and PhilosophyFounded in 2003 by the Flowerman family, Career Explorations is designed to provide opportunities for highly motivated high school students to gain valuable insight into possible career goals and courses of study in a nurturing and supervised environment. Career Explorations makes available a healthy balance of work, culture, social life, and entertainment as participants embrace the transition from high school to college.
Program OfferingsCareer Explorations presents a unique opportunity for high school students to sample the professional world thorough monthlong internships, to experience city life and culture, and to interact with like-minded students from around the world. Working alongside practicing professionals, students experience the day-to-day realities in a chosen career field. Interns gain real-world work experience, learn new skills, make industry contacts, obtain letters of recommendation, and become better prepared to make important decisions about college and the future. Internships: Career Explorations offers internships in a variety of fields, including public relations, theater, film, politics and government, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, medicine, real estate, finance, museum education, journalism, fashion design and marketing, professional sports, general and entertainment law, music, photography, advertising, and event planning, among others. For guidance on choosing an internship, students should contact Career Explorations, who pride themselves on matching each applicant with an internship customized to meet his or her interests. SAT: Through partnership with Vertex Academic Services (http://www.vertexacademic.com), a premier provider of standardized test preparation, Career Explorations is pleased to offer interns the opportunity to receive expert SAT tutoring. Students receive a balance of classroom-style and one-on-one instruction. SAT tutoring is scheduled during evening and weekend free time and does not conflict with CE’s extensive calendar of activities.
EnrollmentEnrollment is competitive and based on merit, application, and recommendations.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesIn addition to a glimpse into a professional field, Career Explorations offers a fun, activity-packed summer that includes supervised activities and opportunities to explore New York City and Boston. Students experience live theater, concerts, sporting events, museums, group dinners, shopping, and everything else that the city has to offer. Career Explorations also offers seminars on the college admissions process and optional tours of college campuses in the area.
FacilitiesNew York interns and staff members reside at the Juilliard School’s Meredith Willson residence hall in world-renowned Lincoln Center, which is located in midtown Manhattan. Boston interns live in Emerson College’s Little Building, which is adjacent to the Boston Common. Both residence halls provide 24-hour security, and all rooms are air conditioned. Juilliard’s residence hall includes a lounge area with television, a pool table, a computer center, and a card-operated laundry room. The Little Building includes Emerson College’s main cafeteria, the Emerson College bookstore, a convenience store, a snack bar, and a fitness center (18 and over). Both residence halls provide dining options for program participants in their modern cafeterias. On weekdays, students and staff members have breakfast and dinner available while taking responsibility for their own lunches. On weekends, brunch and dinner are available in both cafeterias.
StaffIn both New York and Boston, CE staff members are on call 24 hours a day. Each intern is assigned to a Group Advisor (GA), who acts as a friend, mentor, dorm parent, and internship liaison. Group Advisors are an integral part of the Career Explorations experience. The student-staff ratio is 7:1, not including the directors, who also live with the students.
Medical CareAll participants are required to have health insurance, including benefits for emergency care and hospitalization. In New York, emergency and urgent care is available at St. Luke’s Hospital, seven blocks from Juilliard at 59th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. In Boston, the Tufts University–New England Medical Center is located at 750 Washington Street, just over a quarter mile from the Little Building.
CostsTuition for both four-week residential programs for 2007 was $5795. This includes tuition, housing, breakfast and dinner, a one-month pass for public transportation within New York City or Boston, group activities, special events, and weekend excursions. Transportation to and from New York City and Boston, lunch during the week, medical insurance, optional trips, personal laundry, and incidentals are not included. Early enrollment discounts are available. Students should contact Career Explorations for more details.
TransportationInterns are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Boston and New York City. Transportation is provided to and from local airports (Logan for Boston and LaGuardia and Newark for New York) and train and bus stations in each location.
Application TimetableAdmission to both Career Explorations Boston and New York programs are made on a rolling basis. Initial inquiry is welcome year-round. Career Explorations encourages prospective interns to apply early, as internships are selective and spaces are limited. Applications are carefully considered, and students are notified of the admission decision within three weeks of receipt of all application materials. Applications and schedules are available online at the Career Explorations Web site: http://www.ceinternships.com.
