LocationiD Tech Camps provides weeklong, day, and overnight programs where students ages 7–17 build robots, create video games, design Web sites with Flash®, film digital movies, and learn programming. With one computer per student and an average of 6 students per staff member, students are given the attention they need to excel and take home a project at the end of the weeklong course. Programs are located at more than fifty prestigious universities in twenty-three states, including Stanford University, Brown University, UCLA, Columbia University, MIT, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Emory University.
Background and PhilosophyWith one computer per student and an average of 6 students per instructor, students are given the attention they need to excel. Each program immerses students in a creative and fun learning environment, enabling them to harness the power of technology while having a blast and completing a final project with leading products that industry professionals use. iD Tech Camps does not have Counselors-in-Training (CITs), hiring only trained adult counselors to teach the courses and supervise the camps. A high return rate for the staff indicates how the camps are run. This also means that students see familiar faces each summer. A mandatory, comprehensive in-person staff training program covers safety, supervision, and curriculum and instills the passion for technology in children. Regional Managers, who manage a set of camps, have daily contact with their Directors and evaluate their staff each week. Multiple unannounced site visits from the corporate office throughout the summer allow staff members to complete detailed evaluations and provide feedback to the camp staff. Background checks and reference checks are completed on all staff members. All Directors and Lead Instructors must be certified in CPR and first aid. iD Tech Camps is accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA) at its various locations. All iD Tech Camps locations meet and surpass many of the criteria set forth by the ACA. Camps are only located at prestigious universities, which helps set high standards for students to pursue a college degree. Instructors teach hands-on instead of depending on online tutorials to instruct students. iD Tech Camps offers an in-depth, focused, project-based curriculum instead of having students dabble in a variety of areas. Consequently, students come away with solid skill sets, using hardware and software that professionals use in the industry.
Program OfferingsStudents create 2-D and 3-D video games, experience game modding, improve their gaming skills with the Gaming Athletes course, build robots to compete, design Web sites with Flash® animations, film and edit digital movies, create a comic book with zany digital photos, learn programming, and more. Campers take home a project at the end of the weeklong course. In addition, teens can travel to Spain for the documentary filmmaking program, participate in iD Gaming Academy for an intensive game-development program, or produce a documentary of their own at the iD Film Academy. There is also a unique Sports & Tech program at Stanford University and a Surf & Tech program at the University of California, San Diego and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesDuring Family Showcase, iD Tech Camps cordially invites family and friends to tour its labs and meet with iD staff members. Evening activities play a prominent role at the camp. The overnight campus boarding experience promotes new friendships and more time with instructors. Campers join in sessions that include gaming tournaments, Guitar Hero III™, Dance-Dance-Revolution™, karaoke singing, chess, capture-the-flag, soccer, and other activities.
StaffA blend of spirit, energy, dedication, and desire to work with kids and teens is something that iD Tech Camp staff members all share. Each instructor is personally interviewed and carefully selected. Because the camp tries to hire the best, they also pay the best, which means that the instructors are enthusiastic, energetic, and knowledgeable about technology.
Medical CareiD Tech Camps directors and instructors are trained in first aid and CPR and have gone through company training sessions. All students have 24-hour access to on-campus emergency health facilities as well as to local hospitals and emergency centers.
