LocationSt. Timothy’s School is located in Stevenson, Maryland. Its large rural campus provides students with a beautiful and safe environment that is ideally located near a number of major cities. The School is approximately 20 minutes by car from downtown Baltimore; 45 minutes from Washington, D.C.; 1½ hours from Philadelphia; and 3 hours from New York City. The closest airport, Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), is about a 20-minute drive from the campus.
Background and PhilosophyThe Summer Programs at St. Timothy’s School provide an exciting and stimulating experience in a fun environment. Students from around the country and the globe come to the campus to learn, experience new ideas and places, develop strong friendships, and grow as individuals. The School’s programs, committed faculty members, campus resources, unique location, and student body combine to create one of the best summer programs available today. St. Timothy’s academic sessions are open to students entering grades 8 through 11. The average class size ranges from 5 to 15, with a student-teacher ratio of 7:1. These small classes offer individual attention and allow the School to develop a tight-knit community where each student’s intellectual curiosity is kindled and new ideas are embraced. Students divide their time between classroom instruction and field trips, including the Smithsonian, the United Nations, and meetings with acclaimed authors. Afternoons and weekends are a time for a wide variety of athletic, recreational, and cultural activities. The residential life staff plans a variety of outings to appeal to students, including soccer, basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, canoeing, ceramics, theme park visits, and theatrical performances. St. Timothy’s goal is to offer programs and activities that enhance and enrich every student’s summer experience.
Program OfferingsInternational Leadership Program The International Leadership Program exposes students to many issues confronting the world today while helping them to strengthen their leadership skills. Students spend four weeks learning about international relations, the U.S. government, public policy, and various global challenges. Students go behind the scenes to learn how different governmental and nongovernmental organizations work; meet with policy experts, political leaders, and historians to discuss global problems; and eventually develop their own plans about new ways to address these challenges. Students also work to develop their own leadership skills, including communication and public speaking, conflict resolution, team building, group dynamics, and management techniques. The program is intensive and hands on. St. Timothy’s proximity to Washington, D.C., allows students to regularly visit and meet with foreign policy experts, government leaders, foreign service workers, news correspondents, and other important figures in world politics. Students are involved in simulations, case studies, research, seminar discussions, and lectures led by both St. Timothy’s faculty members and outside experts. Academic sessions run from Monday to Saturday. Sundays are a time for relaxing, recreation, and visits to area attractions. Intensive English Language Program The Intensive English Language Program is a four-week ESL program stressing the academic skills of reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Students are also involved in an American culture course, which emphasizes an experiential approach to American culture. This intensive program strengthens students’ practical English skills, helps them gain an appreciation of U.S. history and culture, and prepares them for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Students are placed into three instructional groups based on the results of the Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP) test and oral interviews. The groups consist of basic proficiency (limited exposure to previous English instruction), intermediate proficiency (good comprehension and grammatical skills), and advanced proficiency (a strong capability with the English language, requiring only polishing in idioms, conversation styles, and formal writing). Students spend time in three different instructional classes five mornings a week. These consist of reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Two afternoons a week and all day on Saturday, students spend their time in the American culture class. Students in American culture spend most of their time learning about American history and culture via field trips to important American sites and cultural touchstones. Three afternoons a week, students are involved in afternoon recreation and athletic programs. Sundays include time for optional shopping trips, excursions to recreational and amusement sites, and other visits that take advantage of the beautiful Maryland countryside.
Extra Opportunities and ActivitiesSt. Timothy’s Summer Programs offer students the chance to be involved in a wide range of social and recreational activities. When students are not in class or on a field trip, they may be playing a recreational soccer game, hiking along the Appalachian Trail, watching a Baltimore Orioles baseball game, or shopping in Georgetown. All of the activities and trips are led by the residential and summer program staff. Unlike other programs, there is no additional cost for these activities. Soccer, basketball, swimming, Frisbee, canoeing, hiking, and weight lifting are just some of the athletic activities students can look forward to during the summer. Students might visit a Six Flags amusement park or Hersheypark, sail on Chesapeake Bay, canoe on the Potomac River, shop, visit Water Country Water Park, play mini golf, attend a theatrical production, or go to the cinema.
FacilitiesThe 145-acre rural campus features twenty-two buildings, including the Hannah More Arts Center, which houses a 350-seat theater and dance studio, and the Art Barn, with facilities for two- and three-dimensional art, photography, graphic design, and ceramics. Fowler House, the main academic building, contains the 22,000-volume Ella R. Watkins Library. Students live in two dorms: Carter House, a stately 1930s mansion, and Heath House, a more contemporary residence, both of which contain faculty apartments, living rooms, study areas, computer labs, and student lounges. Athletic facilities include six all-weather tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, and a state-of-the-art athletic complex with basketball courts, locker rooms, a fitness center, and a training room. The School’s extensive riding program is facilitated by indoor and outdoor riding rings, five fenced fields, and a twenty-four-stall barn. The campus has a gated entrance; after-hours visitors are required to check in before entering.
StaffSt. Timothy’s is proud of the faculty and staff members who work with students in the summer. They are some of the brightest, most talented, and fun people working in schools today. Students always find someone with his or her door open, willing to talk. In addition, each student has an adviser to provide guidance and support throughout the summer. Faculty and staff members are on duty around the clock to make sure that the summer is both fun and safe.
