Reading Comprehension

The following questions are to be answered solely on the basis of the information contained in the following passage.

Of those arrested in your jurisdiction in 1990 for felonies or misdemeanors, only 32 percent were found guilty of any charge. Fifty-six percent of such arrestees were acquitted or had their cases dismissed, 11 percent failed to appear for trial, and 1 percent received other dispositions. Of those found guilty, only 7.4 percent received any sentences of over one year in jail. Only 50 percent of those found guilty were sentenced to any further time in jail.

When considered with the low probability of arrests for most crimes, these figures make it clear that the crime-control system in your jurisdiction poses little threat to the average criminal. Delay compounds the problem. The average case took four appearances for disposition after arraignment. Twenty percent of all cases took eight or more appearances to reach a disposition. Forty-four percent of all cases took more than one year to reach a disposition.

1. According to the above passage, crime statistics for 1990 indicate that:
(A) there is a low probability of arrests for all crimes in your jurisdiction.
(B) the average criminal has much to fear from the law in your jurisdiction.
(C) over 10 percent of arrestees in your jurisdiction charged with felonies or misdemeanors did not show up for trial.
(D) criminals in your jurisdiction are less likely to be caught than criminals in the rest of the county.

2. According to the above paragraph, the number of appearances after arraignment and before disposition amounted to:
(A) an average of four.
(B) eight or more in 44 percent of the cases.
(C) over four cases that took more than a year.
(D) between four and eight for most cases.
