Need-to-Know MAT Tips & Strategies

  • Consider relationships in sentences
Think up a simple sentence to express the relationship between the words in an analogy pair. Then use the sentence to try out answer choices until you find one that fits.

  • Think about things from different angles
If you can't find a pair of relationships, change your definition of one or more capitalized words.

  • Know the difference between a guess and an educated guess
If you can eliminate one answer choice when you need to guess, you have a one-in-three chance of guessing correctly. If you can eliminate two choices, you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right.

  • Relax the night before the test
Don't cram. Studying at the last minute will only stress you out. So go to a movie or hang out with a friend - anything to get your mind off of the test!
