Need-to-Know Firefighter Exam Tips & Strategies

General

  • Relax the night before the test
Get a good night's sleep so you can get up early enough that you don't have to rush. It will also give you time to eat breakfast!

  • Get to the test center early
Enter the room early enough to find a comfortable seat and relax.

Test Specific

  • Focus on your reading skills
To prepare for the Reading-Based questions, spend some time each day skimming newspaper articles to improve reading speed; also, read opinion-based pieces such as reviews and editorials to practice identifying the author's main idea.

  • Read every word of every question
Careful reading must extend beyond reading directions to reading each individual question. Qualifying words like most, least, only, best, probably, definitely, not, all, every, and except make a big difference in determining the correct answer.

  • Mark your answers neatly and carefully
Your answer sheet is the only record of answers that is scored. Blacken your answer space firmly and completely; simply drawing an ''X" or check mark through the bubble will not allow the machine to read your response.
