Need-to-Know Law Enforcement Test Tips & Strategies

General

  • Trust your instincts
If you know the answer just by reading the question, you're probably correct. Look for the choice that is similar to your mental response and mark it on the answer sheet.

  • Relax the night before the test
Don't cram. Studying at the last minute will only stress you out.

  • Plan your progress
You are not usually expected to finish all of the questions, but get an idea of how much time you would need to do so. If there are 60 questions and you have 30 minutes, you will have 30 seconds for each question.

Test Specific

Court Officer Exam

  • In some areas, you may receive reference materials prior to the test. Read and memorize as much as possible, since some of it may actually appear on your exam.
  • Work systematically though the Clerical Checking Questions by learning which mistakes are easier to find and by checking one item in all sets before moving on to the next item.
  • For the Reading Comprehension section, read actively, looking for negatives or all-inclusive words and underlining key phrases. Avoid inserting your own judgments into your answers. Take what is given as fact for the purpose of choosing the correct answer

Correction Officer Exam

  • It's a good idea to approach Reading Comprehension questions by reading the questions - not the answer choices, the questions themselves - before you read the selection! They will alert you to look for certain details, ideas, and points of view.

Probation and Parole Officer Exams

  • Know your courts. Comprehensive knowledge of the court systems is important not only because of its relevance to a parole officer but also because it is covered on the exam.
  • It is also important to have a thorough knowledge of an effective Parole System and the principles of parole supervision.

State Trooper Exam

  • Much of the measure of police intelligence is based upon how well you read and what you do with it, so be sure to spend ample time practicing reading comprehension.
  • Know your law. Your knowledge of constitutional and local laws will be tested on the exam.

Police Officer and Police Promotion Exams

  • Much of the measure of police intelligence is based upon how well you read and what you do with that which you read, so be sure to spend ample time practicing reading comprehension.
  • Strange as it may seem, it's a good idea to approach reading comprehension questions by reading the questions - not the answer choices, the questions themselves - before you read the selection.  The questions will alert you to look for certain details, ideas, and points of view.
  •  When answering a difficult Judgment Question, if all other reasoning fails you, answer to the Chief.  In other words, the Chief of Police is testing you for your job.  If you are faced with a difficult choice in making a decision, imagine that the Chief of Police is asking you the question personally.  Give the answer the Chief would want you to give.
