New York School of Interior Design
Throughout its history, the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) has devoted all of its resources to a single field of study—interior design. NYSID is specifically designed for those who wish to pursue a career in one or more of the various fields of interior design and wish to do so under the guidance of a faculty consisting of practicing designers, architects, and art and architectural historians. The various academic programs comprise an integrated curriculum covering architecture, design problem solving, history of art, interior design concepts, interiors and furniture, materials and methods, philosophy and theory, professional design procedures, and technical and communication skills.
Because of its select faculty and established reputation, the School continues to maintain a close relationship with the interior design industry. This provides an excellent means for students to develop associations that offer opportunities to move into the profession after completing their degree program at NYSID.
One of the unique aspects of NYSID’s curriculum is that it is “stepped”—a student may be admitted to the one-year Basic Interior Design (BID) program without a portfolio, then apply for a change of program into the Associate in Applied Science or the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs once a portfolio has been assembled from the work completed in the BID classes. Credits earned in the BID program are required in the degree programs and are transferred upon acceptance.
New York City is NYSID’s campus. Many of the world’s most important museums, galleries, and showrooms are within walking distance. The city is world-renowned for its cultural activities, architecture, historic districts, and cosmopolitan urban experience. The Student Activities Office organizes social and cultural events both on and off campus in the most exciting city on Earth.
NYSID has an active student chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). ASID organizes lectures, tours, workshops, and other events throughout the school year, providing an inside view of the interior design industry.
NYSID is located on a vibrant, tree-lined street in Manhattan’s landmark Upper East Side Historic District. The college’s unparalleled facilities include two auditorium spaces, light-filled studios and classrooms, CAD labs, and a unique lighting design lab. NYSID also has a library containing a comprehensive collection of books, journals, periodicals, and trade and auction catalogs specifically devoted to the interior design field and related fine arts; an extensive image database; a materials library; an atelier; two galleries; a rooftop terrace; and a café, bookstore, and student lounge. NYSID’s housing helps to provide a one-of-a-kind NYC student experience.
One of the strengths of NYSID is its gallery exhibitions relating to architecture and design. Open to both students and the public, the gallery has mounted such acclaimed shows as Designers Salute Edith Wharton and The Mount; Albert Hadley: Drawings and the Design Process; and Bob the Roman: Heroic Antiquity and the Architecture of Robert Adam. The School also sponsors lectures and symposia. Guest lecturers have included Mario Buatta, Charlotte Moss, Albert Hadley, Eric Cohler, John Saladino, Clodagh, and David Garrard Lowe. Students are encouraged to attend the lecture series.
The School maintains an active placement service for graduates and current students. Many students find work while still at NYSID. Because of its reputation, NYSID graduates are employed in the best design, architectural, and industry-related firms in New York City, across the United States, and around the world.
