NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs in applied psychology, art, communication, education, health, and music. Our School has a long history of connecting theory to applied learning experiences through dozens of affiliations and partnerships with urban institutions, building communities within and beyond our classrooms, and nurturing the human spirit. Our faculty members are intellectually adventurous and socially conscious. Our students study in the expansive environment of a great research university and use the urban neighborhoods of New York City and countries around the world as their laboratories. Now in our 118th year of educating artists, professionals, scholars, and researchers, we are applying our creativity and knowledge where it is needed most.

Baccalaureate programs in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions combine intense professional training in music performance, composition, technology, music business, dance, or theater with a solid liberal arts core in the humanities and the social and natural sciences. In seminars, master classes, and selected classes, undergraduate students join advanced graduate students and faculty members in a collaborative environment that fosters creativity of the highest order.

Facilities and resources include practice rooms, ensemble rehearsal rooms, teaching studios, the Frederick Loewe Theatre, two recital rooms, the Black Box recital theater, and the restored Provincetown Playhouse; 12 computer music and recording studios; multimedia laboratories; digital recording and editing rooms featuring Digidesign Pro Tools and Sonic Solutions multitrack systems; 5.1 surround sound; a multitrack facility featuring analog and digital recording, automated inline console, outboard effects, and MIDI processing for live and studio performance; Village Records (a full-service record company providing experience in all aspects of record production and promotion); the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy (an international outreach and training center for music therapists); the NYU Arts and Media Studio (advanced hardware platforms for computer music, graphics, and animation); and the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library (open stack; more than 3.4 million volumes), which includes the Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media. The Kimmel Center for University Life includes a 900-seat state-of-the-art theater, a second 540-seat theater, a 150-seat recital room, and additional ensemble rehearsal rooms and private practice rooms.

Student Performance Opportunities

Student composers and performers are regularly featured in concerts and recitals at NYU, Carnegie Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, Lincoln Center, and landmark jazz clubs and new music venues in Greenwich Village and SoHo and are involved in national and international tours. Performance ensembles include string, brass, and woodwind chamber music ensembles; chamber symphony; two symphony orchestras; concert wind ensemble; Washington Square Woodwind Ensemble; trio-to-septet jazz ensembles; two big-band concert ensembles; new music and dance ensemble; percussion ensembles; Choral Arts Society; Women’s Choir; opera workshop; music theater ensemble; All-University Gospel Choir; University Singers; Jazz Choir; and Composers Ensemble. An active NYU composers’ forum features visiting composers and provides ongoing opportunities for students’ work to be performed. Several mainstage and workshop musical theater and opera productions are presented each year.

Added to this are the excitement and opportunities of New York City that enable students to build important career alliances and professional opportunities. World-class artists regularly provide seminars and master classes and often join students in performances on and off campus. Music business and technology students as well as performance and composition majors gain hands-on experience through internships at leading recording companies, publishing houses, and concert management and public relations firms. Students in music education gain the finest student experiences in the country’s largest public school system.
