Assuming an officer position in the military requires advanced education, including a four-year college degree, and the ability to make decisions under pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A promotion to the rank of a commissioned U.S. military officer comes with a variety of benefits, including a salary increase, educational benefits for advanced degrees, and the opportunity to hold a leadership position at an early age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help you along in your journey to becoming a military officer, we\u2019ve created a guide filled with key points to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to become an officer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, there are four basic paths to becoming a military officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is the most common way to become an officer. The program is offered at 1,700 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/undergraduate\/military-friendly-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colleges and universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country. Students are provided with leadership training and money for tuition in addition to a guaranteed job upon graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Officer Candidate School (OCS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known in the Air Force as<\/span><b> Officer Training School (OTS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a program designed for graduates who have a four-year degree, but did not participate in an ROTC program. Additionally, enlisted servicemembers with 90 hours of college credit can enroll in the program to advance to the position of commissioned officer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Service academies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the most competitive pathways to becoming a commissioned officer. The Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and the U.S. Merchant Marines all offer a high-quality, no-cost, four-year education equivalent to that of civilian Ivy League schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four military service academies are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westpoint.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Military Academy at West Point <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Army), West Point, New York<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/homepage.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Naval Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Navy and Marine Corps), Annapolis, Maryland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usafa.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Air Force Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Air Force), Colorado Springs, Colorado<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscga.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Coast Guard Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Coast Guard), New London, Connecticut<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Merchant Marine also provides a service academy, operating out of King\u2019s Point, New York. Graduates of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmma.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merchant Marine Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are committed to serving in the Naval Reserve, although many opt to enlist in active duty upon graduation.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Direct appointments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are reserved for professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, and clergy. They receive abbreviated officer training and are then commissioned at a rank based on professional experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officer positions in the military fall within several categories, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Commissioned Officers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An officer with specialized training and experience in areas such as law, engineering, or healthcare. Officers are required to have a college degree and are assigned positions after completion of an ROTC or OCS\/OTS program.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Warrant Officers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly skilled technical experts in their field, specializing in areas including intelligence, aviation, or military police. Officers are not required to have a college degree, but must attend Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) before receiving an appointment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Non-commissioned Officers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A non-commissioned officer is outranked by commissioned officers. They are given missions and orders from commissioned officers, and they supervise lower ranks to ensure their assignments are done correctly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #131315;\">General commissioning requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each branch of the military sets its own standards for commissioned officers. The following qualifications provide a general overview of commissioning requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that requirements can change from time to time, so check with recruiting officials or admissions counselors to ensure that you meet the most up-to-date requirements.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Age<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates must be between 19 and 29 years of age for OCS\/OTS, 17 and 21 years of age for ROTC, 17 and 22 years for the service academies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Citizenship<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates must be U.S. citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Physical Condition<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must meet the following physical standards:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Height:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Men must be between 5\u2019 and 6\u20195\u201d. Women must be between 4\u201910\u201d and 6\u20195\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are minimum and maximum weights, according to age and height for males and females.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Vision:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are minimum vision standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Overall Health:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Must be in good health and pass a medical exam. Certain diseases or conditions may exclude persons from enlistment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Education<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates must have a four-year college degree from an accredited institution. Some occupations require an advanced degree or the completion of a four-year degree from a particular field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aptitude<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates must achieve the minimum entry score on an officer qualification test (or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/sat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/product\/asvab-oasc-online-course\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(ASVAB), depending on service.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need help preparing for a military exam? Each service branch has its own criteria for eligibility, and the amount awarded varies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/education\/about-gi-bill-benefits\/post-9-11\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-9\/11 GI Bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another source of funding for college tuition. The benefit must be used within a certain timeframe of the servicemember\u2019s release from the military. The amount of the benefit is related to the length of time served in the military. Post-9\/11 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/how-can-veterans-take-advantage-of-the-gi-bill-when-attending-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GI Bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> education benefits may also be transferred to the spouse and children of the servicemember, and can be used for graduate studies to further the servicemember\u2019s career trajectory.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military officer occupations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military officer job responsibilities range from low-level management to senior leadership. Officer occupations usually fall into the following categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combat specialty officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engineering, science, and technical officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive, administrative, and managerial officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health care officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human resource development officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media and public affairs officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protective service officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support services officers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transportation officers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advancing your career in the military will require hard work, determination, and a college degree.
