They have the basic knowledge and skills needed to stabilize patients, and perform interventions as needed with ambulance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do you become one? We decided to take a closer look at the roles and responsibilities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/product\/emt-practice-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMTs.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The basics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMTs are part of a network of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers that answer the emergency calls placed by civilians in need. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ems.gov\/whatisems.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ems.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cEMS is an intricate system, and each component of this system has an essential role to perform as part of a coordinated and seamless system of emergency medical care.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMS providers must receive formal education and training, in addition to acquiring a license or certification from the state in which they intend to gain employment from. Most states grant licensure or certification, in part, based on achievement of national certification by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nremt.org\/rwd\/public\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NREMT). Check with your state\u2019s EMS agency to determine the requirements for licensure or certification that apply to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four different levels of EMS certification:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paramedic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is an EMT?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nremt.org\/rwd\/public\/document\/emt\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National EMS Scope of Practice Model ,<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0EMTs \u201cprovide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system\u201d and \u201cperform interventions with basic equipment typically found on an ambulance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/product\/master-the-emt-basic-certification-exams-online-book-component\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMTs<\/a> serve as a link, ensuring continuous care for the patient from the scene of the emergency to a hospital or other health facility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMTs can perform the following tasks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Insert oropharyngeal airway adjuncts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Use positive-pressure ventilation devices such as the bag-valve mask<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Suction the upper airway<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Administer supplemental oxygen therapy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Manually stabilize a client with a suspected cervical spine injury<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Manually stabilize an extremity fracture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Control bleeding<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Perform emergency moves<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Insert nasopharyngeal airway adjuncts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Use positive-pressure ventilation devices, such manually triggered ventilators and automatic transport ventilators.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Assist patients in taking their own prescribed medications<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Administer over-the-counter oral glucose for suspected hypoglycemia and aspirin for chest pain of suspected ischemic origin<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Apply and inflate a pneumatic anti-shock garment for fracture stabilization.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think a career as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/9-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-emt-basic-certification-exam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMT<\/a> may be for you?
