Most college graduates have an ordinary memory, attention span, mathematical understanding, comprehension of concepts, and other abilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>Great colleges are well-known.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many great colleges and universities in the world that are less popular than ivy league schools that can offer you a valuable education to help you secure a successful career. Certificate and training programs at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/starting-out-at-a-community-college\/\">community colleges<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/tricks-of-the-trade-4-masters-degrees-you-should-consider-for-your-trade-career\/\">trade schools<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can take less than a year. Associate degree programs usually take two years. If you are 25 years or older, you will have plenty of company. State universities and community colleges are seeing a surge in enrollment for students aged 25 and older. The average age of a part-time student is 29. From attending a community college, where fees are relatively low, to obtaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/scholarship-search.aspx\">grants and scholarships<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/if-i-only-knew-financial-aid-advice-part-one\/\">financial aid<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/on-campus-jobs\/\">part-time jobs<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/529-plans\/\">529 plan<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are several ways to finance college tuition. Those in the military can use in-service Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/military-veterans-scholarships-and-education-benefits-programs\/\">education benefits or military tuition assistance<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>It takes a long time to complete a college program.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending college part-time can extend the time to earn a degree, however, many schools have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/10-accelerated-degree-programs-that-fit-into-your-busy-schedule\/\">accelerated programs<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are designed to earn a degree in a more efficient timeline. Students can also earn college credit by taking exams such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-clep-tests\/\">CLEP<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/dsst-exams-offer-an-alternative-way-to-earn-college-credit\/\">DSST<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those who are or have been in the military can be awarded college credit for their job experience and military training. Many community colleges also offer certificate programs in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/popular-career-programs-looking-for-career-training-schools\/\">trade and vocational areas<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be completed in less than the equivalent of two years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>You have to pass entrance examinations to go to college.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although high scores on standardized examinations are required for admission to some state universities and selective private colleges, this is not the case for community colleges and many other schools since COVID. Many colleges and universities on military installations do not require entrance exams. If you complete your first two years of college working toward a bachelor\u2019s degree at a community college, your work can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/how-to-smoothly-transfer-from-a-community-college-to-a-four-year-university\/\">transfer to a four-year college or university<\/a> without entrance exams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>You need to decide on a major before going to college.\u00a0<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #6c757d;\">Many students aren\u2019t sure what major they want to choose before going to college. If you don\u2019t know what area you want to pursue, you can declare a general major, such as liberal arts. While working toward a bachelor\u2019s degree, focus your first two years on general education courses. In most cases, it\u2019s not necessary to take more than two or three courses in your major in the first two years. You can change your major readily after you complete your first two years where you will likely have a better idea of the field in which you want to major. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>College graduates don\u2019t earn that much more money.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are weighing the cost of college tuition against the salary of those who earned a college degree to see if it\u2019s worth it, listen to this: The average college graduate earns on average twice as much as a high school graduate. College graduates have access to many more job opportunities than those without a college degree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4>Your college entrance exam score is everything and will ultimately determine your chances of getting into college.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/sat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scores are one indicator of college readiness, many schools will weigh other factors such as your curriculum, grades, and writing ability as stronger indicators of college success. If you are applying to a college or university that requires you to take either the ACT or SAT exam, consider these recommendations: take either test your junior year of high school. Review your score, identify the areas in which additional preparation could help, and use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/college-test-prep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">test prep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to boost your score. Take the test again during the fall semester of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/priorities-during-fall-of-senior-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Make a plan and prepare.
