Like becoming a deadline zombie.<\/p>\n<p>Not sure what those are? Keep reading, and find out!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>DO give yourself as much time as possible.\n<ul>\n<li>More than anything else, planning and working ahead will make the application process more successful and less stressful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DON\u2019T be a deadline zombie\n<ul>\n<li>Deadline zombie (noun): a student who staggers around half awake because they started an application just four hours before the midnight deadline. Craves caffeine, not brains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DO ask questions.\n<ul>\n<li>Admissions departments provide valuable info about the institution and its application process \u2013 don\u2019t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DON\u2019T pester the admissions department.\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid being one of those overly enthusiastic applicants who calls\/emails admissions officers daily or sends gifts to their office. Protip: make sure your parents aren\u2019t doing this either.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DO research potential target colleges.\n<ul>\n<li>There are countless options to help you learn about institutions, from school websites and admissions personnel to guidebooks and online resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DON\u2019T apply to every school in the book.\n<ul>\n<li>With college applications, more is not automatically better \u2013 and no, the Common App is not an invitation to apply to every school that takes it, from Adelphi to Yale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DO give early thought to financial aid.\n<ul>\n<li>Many students only start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/college-search\/scholarship-search.aspx\">researching scholarships<\/a>, grants, and loans after their college apps are done \u2013 starting earlier can give you a significant advantage in securing funds for college.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DON\u2019T assume you can\u2019t afford a given school.\n<ul>\n<li>Many of the most expensive schools out there also have the most financial aid to offer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DO stay organized.\n<ul>\n<li>Whether a schedule book, online calendar program, or hundreds of sticky notes, find a way to give your memory some help when it comes to remembering important info while applying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>DON\u2019T take things too seriously.\n<ul>\n<li>Yes, applying to college is challenging and important \u2013 but it\u2019s not the end of the world.
