The summer flew by without even a thought about what to write about for your college essays. Were you too busy with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/testprep\/sat\/\">SAT prep<\/a>? Driver\u2019s ed? Hanging out with friends? Working? Procrastinating? Don\u2019t worry, because help has arrived. Follow these dozen tips below and (hopefully) your juices will be flowing. Also, be sure to pick up a copy of <em>Writing Successful College Applications <\/em>and start reading and getting inspired. But for now, here is your \u201cCliff\u2019s Notes\u201d version of what you can do to get started:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Write about something you care about.<\/strong> If you select a topic that is personal to you and could only be written by you, it will come through as genuine and honest to your reader.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. In brainstorming essay topics, look back at old photo albums and journals you may have kept. <\/strong>Or, consider sharing a family tradition or personal anecdote that helps illustrate to your reader an honest sense who you are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Show, don\u2019t tell.<\/strong> Try to back up any statement you make with anecdotes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Write an essay using your five senses so your reader can see, hear, taste, feel and, smell your essay (or at least most of those!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Use dialogue or stream-of-consciousness writing if that helps propel your story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Write in a voice and tone that reflects who you are.<\/strong> Your essay should sound like you. Don\u2019t use big, fancy words unless you speak with big, fancy words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Open your essay with a \u201chook.\u201d<\/strong> Engage and immerse your reader as soon as possible. Remember, admission officers read twenty-five or more applications per sitting, so make sure yours wakes them up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. If you are writing about an influential person, teacher or hero, be sure to insert yourself into that essay.<\/strong> It can be an essay about that person but be sure to show <em>how<\/em> that person influences or teaches you in some way. Use the essay as an opportunity to see your personality reflected through that person. Show your readers who you are different or influenced by knowing that person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Use active verbs, not linking verbs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Avoid a five-paragraph formatted essay.<\/strong> Your application is not the place to write with rigid structure and formality. College essay writing is expository writing, so many rules of structure can be ignored. Just don\u2019t break rules of grammar and syntax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. Share the essay with someone you trust and who knows you well (possibly an English teacher), to help edit (but not rewrite!) your essay.<\/strong> Then, proofread, proofread, proofread! \u2013 \u201cFrom\u201d and \u201cform\u201d are both correct on your spellcheck, so those types of errors are only caught if <em>you<\/em> catch them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.
