{"id":7723,"date":"2018-08-02T16:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T22:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/?p=7723"},"modified":"2018-08-03T05:46:59","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T11:46:59","slug":"facetime-tips-on-budgeting-for-college-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/facetime-tips-on-budgeting-for-college-students\/","title":{"rendered":"FaceTime Tips on Budgeting for College Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unless you have an older sibling, not many students get a chance to get real tips on budgeting for college.  <\/p>\n<p>Meal plans can be tricky to manage; it\u2019s hard to get a grasp on what it costs to live \u2018off-campus\u2019 and then there are other costs (such as student tickets, intramural sports fees, etc.) that it\u2019s hard to plan for as an 18-year-old venturing out of the nest for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>So where can students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersons.com\/blog\/category\/scholarships\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turn for advice<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been years since most teachers were college students, and probably even longer since a student\u2019s parents were co-eds, so where are they supposed to turn for advice? If only students could \u2018FaceTime a Friend\u2019 to get some help on budgeting for college and other matters. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where we step in. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QJbdBjyTOTw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Aren\u2019t \u2018Loans\u2019 and \u2018Aid\u2019 the Same?<\/h2>\n<p>One thing Gage talks about in the video is the \u201caid\u201d he received due to his family situation. That is in fact different from the loans that most people think of as federal funding. <\/p>\n<p>Every student has the same availability to borrow from the government. There is a maximum amount you can borrow based on how long you\u2019ve been in school, and whether or not you are an independent student. The government also sets on fixed interest rates for student loans, and that\u2019s how it works. <\/p>\n<p>Federal aid is a whole different beast. When budgeting for college, it\u2019s important to understand how much in \u201caid\u201d that you can receive, based on your financial need and your family situation.
