Vocational Training at Star Career Academy

Star Career Academy provides performance-based vocational training that prepares students for entry-level positions in the allied health, cosmetology, culinary, hotel and restaurant management, and paramedic fields. (Not all programs offered at all locations.)

The school's hands-on learning environment includes practical training in the classroom, externships in most programs, and accomplished instructors. As a result, students receive the skills and confidence needed to obtain employment immediately upon graduation.

Star Career Academy provides day and evening classes, financial aid to those who qualify, and job-readiness in as few as 8 months.

Eight Convenient Locations

Star Career Academy serves the northeastern region of the United States.

It has campuses in Manhattan and Long Island, New York; Philadelphia and Valley Forge, Pennsylvania; and Egg Harbor Township, Brick, Clifton, and Newark, New Jersey. However, not all of the school's programs are offered at all of its locations.

Professional Cooking Programs

The professional cooking program provides hands-on training in the fundamentals of cooking including baking and pastry arts; catering; food preparation, purchasing, and sanitation; quantity food production and service; and restaurant operations.

The professional cooking program is specifically geared for those who interested in starting out filling roles such as prep cook's assistant, line cook, short-order cook, pantry person, baker, garde manger, or sous chef, with an eye towards moving up the ladder. Some professional cooking programs feature a professional externship in addition to in-school training in order to assist students in their preparations for entering the food industry.

Commercial Cooking Programs

The commercial cooking program includes hands-on learning of cooking fundamentals, catering, food preparation, and international and regional cuisines. This program is offered in the evenings and is intended for individuals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills within the culinary field.

The commercial cooking program involves a professional externship, to provide students with plenty of experience. Courses in the commercial cooking program include "Skills Development," which covers all the basics; "Food Preparation," which covers equipment and procedures used in professional food establishments; "Catering," which covers the necessary components involved in preparing food for a catered affair; and "International and Regional Kitchen," which covers cooking a wide variety of cuisines for large numbers of people.

Professional Pastry and Baking Program

The professional pastry and baking program at Star Career Academy enables students to learn about the history and structure of the baking industry, as well as acquire in-depth knowledge about baking fundamentals.

The program also trains students in advanced techniques that focus on artisan and specialty breads, specialty cakes and pastries, advanced dessert production and presentation, and health-conscious desserts.

The professional pastry and baking program includes courses such as "Pastry and Baking Basics," which covers the history of baking and common ingredients, techniques, and equipment involved in baking; "Cakes," which covers all kinds of cake including yellow, chocolate, angel food, and more, with a particular focus on elements of cake decorating; "Breads," which covers the characteristics and preparation of different kinds of bread, including Italian, French, ryes, and more; and "Advanced Techniques for Pastry and Desserts," which includes information on techniques for creating chocolate and sugar products, as well as ice cream and other frozen desserts.

Medical Assistant Program

Star offers medical assistant programs that consist of clinical and administrative curricula. The clinical curriculum covers several patient-care duties including diagnostic testing and electrocardiography, laboratory procedures, patient intake, phlebotomy, specialty examinations, and vital sign readings.

The administrative curriculum covers computer applications, insurance procedures, medical billing and coding, and medical office management.

Dialysis Technician Program

The dialysis technician program's curriculum includes clinical and theoretical training that prepares students for certification and positions in hospital centers, outpatient maintenance dialysis centers, transplant centers, and other healthcare agencies.

Surgical Technology Program

Students in the surgical technology program at Star Career Academy learn all aspects of surgery, including anatomy and physiology, anesthesia, medical terminology, instrument exchange and count, law and ethics regarding surgery, surgical emergencies, surgical instruments, and wound care.

Cardiology Technician Program

The cardiology technician program covers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and testing procedures, including basic and advanced electrocardiology and electrocardiography, Holter monitoring, patient assessment, stress testing, and pacemaker analysis.

Phlebotomy, human anatomy and physiology, cardiac pharmacology, vital signs, and basic medical electronics and instrumentation are also all core elements of the curriculum.

Paramedic Training Program

The Paramedic Training program is designed to help basic level EMTs strengthen their skills and advance their careers. Its intensive curriculum includes training in 12-lead EKGs, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, and hazardous materials recognition. This program is offered at the Philadelphia campus. Active EMT certification is required for this program.

Insurance and Health Information Technology Program

Students in the insurance and health information technology program gain the necessary skills to successfully meet the needs and mandates of the insurance and allied health industries.

They acquire hands-on experience with current software and equipment, gain proficiency with medical terminology, develop professionalism and communication skills, and acquire knowledge about the national diagnostic and procedural coding systems. This program prepares students to be on the professional side of the allied health industry.

Cosmetology Diploma Program

Students in the cosmetology program can earn diplomas that prepare them for the licensure examinations in the state of Pennsylvania. They study a comprehensive curriculum that integrates hands-on practice with the professional, business, legal, and ethical aspects of the field.

Hotel and Restaurant Management

The hotel and restaurant management program prepares students for a wide-variety of positions in the hospitality industry. Students gain skills in hotel and motel operations, front and back office procedures, housekeeping administration, legal and security procedures, food and beverage operations, and event management.

They also learn the fundamentals of restaurant operations including menu development, inventory and cost control, and quality restaurant service.

Experienced and Professional Faculty Members

Instructors at Star Career Academy are experienced practitioners who bring "real world "experience to the classroom. Jennifer Messmer, lead dialysis technician instructor at the Long Island campus, has been a dialysis nurse for more than 20 years. She has provided treatment in several areas, including hemodialysis, acute unit, peritoneal dialysis, home care, pediatrics, and transplants.

Financial Assistance at Star Career Academy

Star Career Academy offers financial aid -- including grants, loans, and work study programs -- to those who qualify.

It also works with several state agencies such as the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Jersey City Employment and Training program to provide training to eligible individuals.

Shepperson worked at a supermarket during the day and a fast food restaurant at night while earning his degree at Star. He now works as a surgical technician in a surgery center in his area.
