Brigham Young University's Nursing Program Educates Family Nurse Practitioners Who Combine Secular and Spiritual Knowledge

The Brigham Young College of Nursing located in Provo, Utah is a community of scholars engaged in the promotion of health and healing. The mission of BYU is to develop professional nurses who promote health, care for the suffering, engage in the scholarship of the discipline, invite the Spirit into health and healing and leads with faith and integrity.

The College of Nursing offers a generic Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program that leads to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree. The program is approved by the Utah State Board of Nursing, and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Graduates of the program are highly sought after, with a high employment rate and a long tradition of a high pass rate on the certification examination.

Family nurse practitioners emphasize primary care health promotion disease prevention and management of common, chronic, and acute conditions across the life span. BYU's Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed to prepare advanced practice nurses as family nurse practitioners. Students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to translate research into practice and use evidence based practice methods and information systems/technology to ensure quality of care and safety for patient. In addition students are prepared to care for families and individuals with common, chronic and complex conditions in a variety of settings and across the life span. Also students are able to assume leadership roles in collaborating with other health care professions in planning and ensuring optimal health care.

Outstanding clinical experiences are provided for students in a variety of primary care settings. Students are required to have a car for travel for clinical experiences. The faculty in the graduate program are exceptionally well prepared and include practitioners with doctoral and master's preparation in the areas they teach. In addition, adjunct clinical faculty members in clinical areas also work with students to provide knowledge and clinical supervision.

BYU College of Nursing Provides Facilities that Support Students in Their Educational Experience

Brigham Young provides supportive facilities and services for graduate students. Research at Brigham Young is supported by a dedicated research center, equipped with modern computer stations with statistical software. Graduate students can easily enhance their research skills with quantitative data analyses and qualitative data management. The software can also produce graphics, making the research center an important place to prepare scholarly presentations.

In addition to the main research center, the Nursing Learning Center (NLC) is located in the same building on the first floor. The NLC provides College of Nursing students with a reference desk, numerous nursing instructional programs, and other resources. It has fully equipped examination rooms that allow students to develop their assessment skills. Also the NLC is equipped with models and high fidelity simulation which allow for students to have real life experiences. In addition the use of standardized patients are used.

Students have access to outstanding library facilities. The College houses a medical librarian who works with students in helping them to develop skills in accessing and appraising the best evidence in their clinical decision making.

A study area designed specifically for graduate students is provided. This area has computer stations and allows for students to meet together and share ideas.
