Top Rankings for Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) received top rankings nation-wide and worldwide. "U.S. News and World Report" ranks undergraduate engineering at number 6 in the nation and graduate engineering at 9th in the nation.  Engineering at Illinois is #4 worldwide in the "Academic Ranking of World Universities in Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences." (2015).

Illinois ranks #10 on Time’s list of the 25 Best Public Colleges for Big Paychecks. (2017). A Wall Street Journal study of the largest public and private companies, nonprofits and government agencies ranked the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign #3 for graduates top-rated by recruiters. The Well-Funded and Highly Ranked Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering

The Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering faculty member and student research is well-supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Office of Naval Research Laboratory. 

The cross-curricular faculty members specialize in operations research and optimization, stochastic systems, control systems, decision making and systems design, and structural mechanisms.

The department offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree program and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program either in industrial engineering or in systems and entrepreneurial engineering. Students in the M.S. Industrial Engineering program may choose a concentration in Advanced Analytics. The joint Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) is available with any M.S. degree program. 

Through the Medical Scholars Program, graduate students can also pursue a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering or Systems or Entrepreneurial Engineering degree while earning a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.

State-of-the-Art Facilities State-of-the-Art Facilities

The Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering is home to the Optimization Laboratory, the Product Dissection Laboratory, the Senior Engineering Project Design Studio, and the Mechatronics Laboratory.

In addition, the department conducts research through the Decision Systems Laboratory, the Enterprise Systems Optimizations Laboratory, the Information Systems and Decision Analysis Laboratory, and the Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation Research Laboratory.

Master's Degree Programs at Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering

Both the M.S. in Industrial Engineering degree program and the M.S. in Systems and Entrepreneurial Engineering degree program have a thesis and a non-thesis option. The thesis option in both degree programs require the completion of 32 hours. The M.S. Industrial Engineering degree program requires 24 hours of coursework and 8 hours of thesis research; the M.S. Systems and Entrepreneurial degree program requires 28 hours of coursework and 4 hours of thesis research. Through the non-thesis option, students complete 36 hours of coursework.

Doctoral Programs at Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering

Both Ph.D. programs offered by the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering require 96 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree. For the Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering degree program, graduate students complete 56 hours of coursework and 40 hours of dissertation research. Through the Ph.D. in Systems and Entrepreneurial Engineering degree program, students complete 64 hours of coursework and 32 hours of dissertation research. Students entering with an approved M.S. degree complete 32 hours of coursework and 32 hours of dissertation research for either degree program.

The Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering includes faculty who have graduated from many of our peer institutions, such as Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, Georgia Institute of Technology, and KAIST, to name a few.

Over 70% of our faculty have been funded by the National Science Foundation and all have research funding from state, federal, or industry sources.

Faculty highlights include 5 fellows, 5 authored/co-authored books, 9 edited/co-edited books, 64 book chapters, 385 invited lectures, plus numerous teaching and research awards. One-third of our faculty have received best paper/publication awards and over 60% of our faculty have or currently serve as journal editors.
