Overview

ISDE and Columbia University Global Sports Law Companion Degree

The Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE), a Madrid-based leader in legal education, and Columbia University School of Professional Studies, offer a Global Sports Law Companion Degree Program for professionals with a law background who are interested in careers in global sports law and sports management.

Degree Overview

Students in the Global Sports Law Companion Degree Program complete intensive study for two professional degrees -- Master of Science in Sports Management from Columbia University and Master in Global Sports Law from ISDE. All classes are held on the Columbia campus in New York City, the sports capital of North America, for 10 months during the fall, spring, and summer terms.

Both degree programs are taught by renowned faculty from Columbia and ISDE who are leaders in the fields of sports law, sports analytics, sports media, and professional and collegiate athletics.

Coursework provides foundational instruction on the sports industry combined with specific training in sports management (accounting, finance, marketing, personnel management, and analytics) and law (intellectual property law and alternative dispute resolution). Networking events and professional workshops held at leading law firms and sports organizations in New York City complement the coursework.

After successfully completing the coursework, students pursue a three-to six-month internship with a global sports law firm, agency, team, league, or regulatory body, based on academic profile and professional goals.

Curriculum and Schedule

Courses in the first fall and spring semesters comprise Globalization of Sport; Digital Sports Media and Marketing; Sports Accounting and Finance; International Comparative Sports Law; Leadership and Personnel Management in the Sports Industry; Introduction to Finance; and an analytics course and elective. Summer courses comprise Intellectual Property Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

In the second year of the program, students pursue an internship in sports law with a sports organization affiliate, with assistance of an advisor. At the end of the term, students submit a written summary of their internship project to the advisor and make a presentation on the experience to their peers.

Internship Partners

Among the organizations that have provided internships for students in the program are the United States Olympic Committee, Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the World Anti-Doping Agency, and international law firms in Switzerland, Portugal, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Notable Faculty and Guest Lecturers

The Global Sports Law Companion Degree Program offers students a chance to learn from faculty and guest lectures who are leaders in the field. Micky Lawler, for example, brings 30 years of experience in sports entertainment to the program. She serves as the president of the Women's Tennis Association and has played an important role in the expansion of tennis into China. Ms. Lawler is also a recipient of the "Game Changer: Women in Sports Business" award from the Sports Business Journal.

Faculty are affiliated with top national and international sports associations, leagues, and organizations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Fédération Internacionale de Football Association (FIFA), National Basketball Association (NBA), and Court of Arbitration for Soccer (CAS).

Placement and Networking Opportunities

Students in the program have access to the same academic and administrative benefits as other fulltime Columbia University students and are provided placement services by ISDE. In addition to the academically rigorous curriculum, the program offers students outstanding networking opportunities with peers at Columbia and ISDE, colleagues from across the Ivy League, and sports management industry leaders.
