The Master of Public Health degree at Liberty University

Liberty University's Master of Public Health (MPH) is a research-based graduate degree that enhances students' marketable credentials. In public health fields, the MPH is comparable to the MBA. The MPH is an applied science degree that focuses on community health, with epidemiology (the study of epidemics and epidemic diseases) and biostatistics as the foundation. This degree program is 42 credit hours and has three specializations available: Global Health, Health Promotion, and Nutrition.

Details of the MPH degree

This degree is a great fit for students who desire a health care delivery or public health career, as well as those seeking expanded public health knowledge for personal interest or service. Graduates can work in organizations such as departments of health, public health clinics, epidemiology, disease control, nonprofit organizations, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Women, Infants and Children. Some common careers include infection control specialist, health care manager and administrator, public health policy maker, public health officer in developing countries, nutrition consultant, and public health educator. All students must complete a practicum in an organization that provides planning or services relevant to public health and the student's specialization. This practicum provides students with the opportunity to use knowledge and skills acquired in the academic program under the direction of a preceptor or supervisor. The practicum also affords students an opportunity to develop and apply certain competencies that are better developed outside of the classroom. Students have worked at locations such as Samaritan's Purse, local public health agencies, food banks, Hope of Life International, American Red Cross, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, employee wellness programs, and the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.

Dr. Richard Lane, the director of the MPH program, has served as a physician for Light Medical, as the director of Student Health Services at Centra Medical Group, as Chief of Aeromedical Services for the U.S. Air Force, and as a Squadron Flight Surgeon. He has also done several interviews with news and radio stations on topics such as Ebola, H1N1 flu, and tick control. Lane is a contributing author and medical advisor for several publications, including Life at the Crossroads and World Help. He has also given dozens of presentations for various conferences and symposiums, such as the Virginia Athletic Trainers Association Annual Clinical Symposium, Christian Connections for International Health Annual Conference, and several schools and health organizations in Colombia, Togo, Poland, and Honduras.

MPH students will also take classes with Dr. Kathryn Reisnma, who has 10 years of experience in public health program planning, monitoring, evaluation, data analysis, teaching, and advising. She lived in sub-Saharan Africa for five years where she accomplished numerous tasks, including educating over 400 mothers on family nutrition and providing 300 children with deworming medicine, Vitamin A supplements, and anthropometric measurement assessments. While in Africa, she also co-created a conceptual model to demonstrate cultural influences on exclusive breastfeeding practices.
