An online, flexible Master of Arts in International Studies

The online Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) at Concordia University Irvine prepares students to make a real impact on communities all over the world. This accelerated program provides in-depth knowledge about the integration of business and culture. It also allows students to develop ethical leadership abilities so they can serve people and communities with sensitivity and integrity.

MAIS Curriculum

The MAIS curriculum has 34 units of coursework that can be completed online in 16 to 18 months. Core courses equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse aspects of international studies. Courses include:

- Intercultural Competency
- Global Politics & Leadership
- International Social Research Methods
- International Development Theory & Practices
- Global Economics and Finance
- Global Religious Landscape
- Global Conflicts and Conflict Resolution
- Social Change and Project Management

The "International Field Work" course allows students to focus their studies on a particular region. It includes three weeks of international travel, which an MAIS faculty member coordinates and leads, to one of four regions:

- Africa
- Central/South America
- China
- Southeast Asia

This experience provides students with a rich setting for applying academic knowledge, a social laboratory for conducting research, and a setting for developing relationships with residents of regional communities.

Coursework culminates with a capstone project in which students apply both theoretical knowledge and practical observations and research gained from their international experiences.

Africa Field Experience

Students who select the Africa field experience have access to one of three countries: Cameroon, Ghana, or Sierra Leone. They focus on these areas:

-  Project research and evaluation
- Community-driven development
- Agribusiness and climate change
- Advocacy and communication

They participate in the following activities:

- Business observation and visits
- Lectures/seminars/talks on regional critical issues by the local experts
- Participatory service trips to existing NGO / NPO project sites

Central/South America Field Experience

Students who select the Central/South America field experience have access to one of the three countries: Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica. They can focus on these areas:

- Community-driven development
- Regional politics
- International Relations
- Intra & Inter Continent Migration

They participate in the following activities:

- Lectures/seminars/talks by local experts
- Participatory service trips to existing NGO / NPO project sites
- Visits to cultural sites

China Field Experience

Students who select the China field experience have access to one or more of the following Chinese regions:  Jiangsu, Yunnan, Chengdu or Shanghai. They can focus on these areas:

- Sustainable economic growth
- Regional conflict and resolution
- Community-driven development
- Internal human migration   
- Public Policy

They participate in the following activities:

- Lectures/seminars/talks by local experts
- International business and company visits
- Government agency visits
- Participatory service learning trips
- Visits to cultural sites

Southeast Asia Field Experience

Students who select the Southeast Asia field experience have access to one or more of the following four countries: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, or Myanmar. They can focus on these areas:

- Regional and Global Diplomacy
- Human Security Studies
- Peace Studies

They participate in the following activities:

- Lectures/seminars/talks by local experts
- Business observation and visits
- Intense learning of human security studies
- NGO / NPO projects
- Service trips
- Visits to cultural sites

Multi-cultural MAIS Faculty

MAIS faculty members are multi-cultural educators who possess global mindsets. They are also scholars and practitioners who have a wealth of experience working in international and non-profit organizations.

Professor of International Studies Elizabeth Childs Drury, PhD is an experienced practitioner who works to create intercultural effectiveness in changing, diverse, or global settings. She has worked and lived in Costa Rica, Germany, and Hungary. She trained hundreds of teachers for international appointments, and she directed Central Europe programs for a Christian educational services organization. Her scholarly work includes numerous talks, presentations, and publications.

Professor of International Studies Paul Chambers, PhD is a prolific researcher who investigates subjects related to Southeast Asia. His research focuses primarily on Thailand, but he has also conducted research concerning Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines. He has authored and co-authored five books, numerous journal articles, and several book chapters about Southeast Asia's democratization, international politics, and military. His articles have been published in "Asian Survey," "Contemporary Southeast Asia," the "Journal of Contemporary Asia," and other journals.

Financial Aid

Tuition for the MA in International Studies program at Concordia University Irvine is competitively priced. Students also incur travel costs associated with the international fieldwork experience. They may qualify for federal loans or assistance through the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon programs.

MAIS students strengthen and develop analytical, speech, and writing skills and gain detailed knowledge about global relations. As a result, the graduates are prepared for careers in government, international affairs, international business, journalism, law, non-governmental organizations, non-profit leadership, research, and teaching.
