A long-established school with multiple campuses

South University is a private school based in Savannah, Georgia, where it was founded in 1899 as a business college. Today South University offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs on its campuses in more than a dozen Southern and Midwestern cities, including Virginia Beach, which opened in 2010. South University also runs distance-learning programs through South University, Online Programs. Many of its degree programs are tailored to meet the scheduling needs of working adults.

The Master of Science in Nursing with a Specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner degree program

South University's Virginia Beach campus offers a Master of Science in Nursing with Specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner degree program, resulting in the MSN degree. The program is designed to help students build skills in health promotion, primary care in the community, and healthcare delivery efficiency. In addition, students are taught the skills needed to assess and diagnose patient health, create care plans, collaborate with colleagues, and help patients navigate the healthcare system. There are two components to the degree program. The core MSN degree program curriculum consists of 24 credit hours of coursework: "Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse," "Advanced Theoretical Perspectives for Nursing," "Advanced Pathophysiology," "Advanced Nursing Practice I and II," and "Nursing Research Methods." The 38 credit-hour FNP specialization degree program includes the following courses: "Pharmacology," "Advanced Health and Physical Assessment," and the "Graduate Project in Nursing." In addition, four supervised family health practica totaling at least 780 clock hours are required, covering "Adults and Geriatrics," "Women's Health," "Pediatrics," and "Primary Care."

Degree Programs for working nurses

South University's RN to MSN Nursing Completion degree programs are tailored for nurses who already hold associate's degrees or nursing school diplomas and who want to advance their careers. Graduates of the program earn both the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and the Master of Science in Nursing with Specialization in Family Nurse Practitioner degree. The program is structured to save students time in school by applying selected graduate coursework toward the undergraduate degree. The program is academically challenging and requires a combined undergraduate and graduate credit-hour total of 213-233 credits, including the core nursing graduate courses and family nurse practitioner specialty courses required for South's standard MSN-FNP degree program. Unlike the standard MSN-FNP degree program, undergraduate courses make up 90 hours of the RN to MSN degree program total. Up to 45 of those hours may be transfer credit from an approved institution, and a minimum of 30 must be taken at South University. Part of the required undergraduate work is an eight class undergraduate nursing sequence that includes the following courses: "Professional Nursing Practice," "Principles of Assessment for RNs," "Caring for a Multicultural Society," "Caring for the Community," "Concepts of Teaching and Learning," "Leadership in a Diverse Society," "Financial Management for Nurses," and "Legal and Ethical Issues in Nursing." Students also choose one elective from these choices: "Complementary and Alternative Methods," "Palliative Care," and "Gerontological Nursing."

Scholarship and financial aid options for graduate students

South University works with the non-profit Education Foundation to provide scholarships to qualified students at all of its campuses. Award opportunities vary by campus and by field of study.
